Probably one of the best decisions I have ever made was joining my high school cross country team back in 10th grade. I was not sure how I would like it, but what started out as something to put on a college resume ended being one of my greatest passions. Running has become a part of who I am and, because of it, it has made me a happier and healthier person. In my opinion, cross country will always be the best and most underrated sport. There are a ton of reasons, however, I will just name a few!
1. Everyone Can Do It!
No matter who you are or where you are from anyone can do cross country. It does not matter how good or bad you. It is the work ethic and time you put into and that is where you get results.
2. The Meets Last 30 Minutes
Ok, so this is not entirely true, but hear me out! Cross country meets are probably some of the shortest sports both on and off the course. Meets do not go on for hours like football and soccer games do. Spectators are always happy with this fact, however the racer still has to deal with those long bus rides.
3. It's Inexpensive
Probably my favorite thing about this sport! You do not need tons of equipment or special gear. Sure the products at running specialty stores are nice, but you easily can train in a pair of basketball shorts. The only drawback is the shoes and even then they can last you up to six months.
4. Great Way To Get In Shape
I did not do any sports before I started cross country and lets just say I was not in the best of shape. However despite my initial reluctance, I am glad I did because I can honestly say that I in the best shape of my life.
5. It's An Individual Sport
Cross country is actually a pretty individual sport. The training and the races are all based on your effort! A PR or a great workout is all based you!
6. But It Is Still A Team Sport
Although cross country is very individual it is still a team sport too. Whether you are finishing a race, a workout, or even a long-distance run your team is always there. Their cheers are heard from the start of the race, till long after you finish.
7. You Feel Great When You Finish
There is nothing like the feeling when you finish a race. Sure, you might be exhausted, out of breath, and a little thirsty, but the sense of accomplishment you get feels so rewarding.
8. It Is A Rewarding Sport
When you finish a race and realize you got a personal best is probably one of the best feeling you can have. That feeling you get from reaching your goals is just so rewarding and even if you don’t do well one race there is always a next one.
9. Training Is Hardcore
For the people that think our sport is easy, try running in the rain, snow or sleet. I have run in temperatures from below zero to as high 90 degrees. I am pretty sure the only time I could not run because of the weather was when there was thunder or lightning.
10. Teammates Are Your Life Long Friends
Some of my best friends are my teammates. Some have even become my roommates, but even if you are not the best of friends you still stop and chat every once in a while.
All right, so maybe not all these reasons make cross-country the best sport. Still, I think these reasons are what make it special and that is something every XC runner understands.
