Snow is falling, bells are ringing, and the chestnuts are roasting on an open fire. Yup, it's Christmastime, and it is my favorite time of year. There's just something about twinkly lights, pine trees, and Andy Williams' crooning that makes me feel so happy and gooey inside. Living in New York at Christmastime is really special because there's just something extra magical about the city during the month of December. So here is a definitive list of ten reasons why Christmas in New York City is so wonderful.
1. The Store Displays
Take a walk down any street in the city during December and you'll be met with wreaths, Christmas trees, bells, bows, lights, everything. The stores really go all out, especially on 5th Ave, where famous displays from Saks 5th Avenue, Tiffany & Co, Bergdorf Goodman, and pretty much everywhere else can be enjoyed as you stroll along.
2. Bryant Park Christmas Market
Although many haven't been before, I go every year and I have to say, it is not something to be missed. Over one hundred vendors are set up, selling everything from hot chocolate to onesies to high-end jewelry. There's a giant Christmas tree, an ice rink, and a Santa's corner that offers free pictures with the big man himself. The wide range of food stands and shopping is sure to satisfy everyone who comes here, not to mention the fact that it is literally just an entire market that makes it feel like you're in the North Pole.
3. Central Park
An iconic staple of New York City, Central Park is famous all year round. At Christmastime, though, it has that certain something that just adds to the holiday magic. You can go ice skating or take a walk through the park and (if it's a white Christmas) be transported to a quiet, snow-covered wonderland. Another sweet Christmas idea is a carriage ride through the snow, which just makes it extra cozy, Come on, it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with youuu..
4. Holiday Movies
Maybe one of the reasons Christmas feels so magical in New York City is because it's the setting for so many Christmas movies! "Elf," "Miracle on 34th Street," "Home Alone 2: Lost In New York"-- the list goes on. Christmas in New York has become an iconic image, almost a symbol for the holiday itself. The movies go through all the famous sites and make them even more magical with their Christmas cheer.
5. The Empire State Building
Lit up like a beacon of merriness, the Empire State Building lights up its tip red and green for the holiday season. If this festive display lighting up the sky doesn't get you in the Christmas mood, I don't know what will.
6. Radio City Christmas Spectacular
Of course, nothing says Christmas quite like a Christmas Spectacular, and the Rockettes put on an amazing one. If you're lucky enough to get tickets to this show at least once, I recommend you go because, it truly is spectacular. Through a staged journey throughout Manhattan and catchy Christmas tunes with leg kicks that are so synchronized it's mesmerizing, the show will have you hooked from the moment the curtain rises. Side effects may include humming the songs for days after and wanting to become a Rockette. (I mean, who wouldn't want to be one?)
7. Macy's
Macy's Herald Square is another site to see at Christmas. Maybe it's because of the movie, "Miracle on 34th Street," but this department store goes all out with its decorations--inside and outs. Their window displays and festive decorations throughout the store make you feel like a little kid again, filled with wonder and Christmas cheer. With "Believe" emblazoned on the front of the store and all throughout, it sort of makes you believe in a little Christmas magic. The line may be a little long for a picture with Santa, but it's worth the wait for such a magical experience. Their Santa Claus looks like the real thing!
8. The Weather
Okay, so this may not appeal to everyone, but it just adds to the Christmas effect when everyone is bundled up in hats and scarves and the snow is falling. The bustling city can be pretty peaceful when blanketed in snow, and who doesn't want a white Christmas?
9. City-wide Decorations
The separate store decorations are one thing, but the whole city is decked out in Christmas cheer at this time of year. My favorite are outside of Radio City Music Hall with the giant ornaments and Christmas lights!
10. Rockefeller Center
Last, but definitely not least is Rockefeller Center. The ice rink is set below the plaza with a magnificent view of the tree and surrounding lights, and others can stand by and watch from above as you glide around. The tree itself is a sight to see on its own. The massive tree is the setting for countless couple pictures and group trips to the city- to be honest, a trip into the city in December isn't complete without seeing it.
Hopefully you all get the chance to check off a few of the things on this list this year. If you're a Christmas nut like me, I guarantee these will all get you in the Christmas mood. Happy Holidays to everyone, and Merry Christmas!
