10 Reasons Why I Like Books More Than People

I just really love to read.

Anyone who knows me knows what a big book nerd I am. I have an opinion on every single book I have read, and a lot of opinions about books I haven’t even touched. It’s crazy, I know. And sometimes I wish these books were people, and that the characters could jump off the page and be my best friends. That would seriously just be awesome. But no one has invented a machine that could do that…unless you count Taylor Lautner as the actual Jacob Black because hey that could totally work. So until that magical day happens, I like books more than people…and here’s why.

1. Books don't interrupt you.

Interruptions were rude in 2009, and are still rude. Please just let me read in peace. It's not that I don't like you, it's just that I like my book better at the moment.

2. They are full of surprises.

Human beings and books are a lot alike in the surprise department, but books do it better. Sometimes the surprises aren’t tied up with a pretty bow in writing, and sometimes they are. Either way, surprises are so much better in books.

3. The characters will never disappoint you like the actor in the movie adaptation.

*Me watching a movie that was a book first* "That's not how that character was supposed to look, and they totally forgot about this other character, and that person is not supposed to have a southern accent..." I apologize in advance if you sit beside me in the theater.

4. They understand you.

There are just some things in this world that books understand more perfectly than any human being could. *cough cough* John Green *cough cough*

5. You can relive the stories countless times.

Sure you have your trusty memories to look back on, but with a book in hand you’re able to flip right to the page and relive the best and worst moments of a character’s life.

6. The death over a favorite character takes priority.

Excuse me while I go cry...again. *Sobs continuously while holding onto a sock*

7. The fantasy world is always better than real life.

It’s just the way it is.

8. I'd rather be best friends with Ron Weasley than you.

We're both afraid of spiders. We're both super awkward. It just works.

9. I rather spend my money on books rather than experiences.

They're pretty much the same thing, right?

10. Books are always there for me.

Through every move and every season of my life there has always been a trusty book at my side. And I could not have asked for anything better.

I love people, don't get me wrong. But it's the books that my heart belongs to. Their smell and hard backs are irresistible. I'm almost positive my books love me as much as I love them. And that is how it'll always be.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
