Being in band has many perks, one of them being that they look great on a résumé. Why? Because band kids make great leaders and team members. What makes band kids so much different?

1. They understand teamwork

Being in band requires a lot of teamwork, from playing your part correctly to going to the right place on the field to make the right forms. Those aren't things that can be done alone.

2. They are ambassadors

Bands represent their schools or universities. The members of the band realize this and carry themselves with dignity and respect to make their school look better.

3. They are dedicated

Even when the team may be doing poorly, the band continues to cheer them on and support them. They keep up their energy, even in the hard times.

4. Previous leadership experience

Many of them were section leaders or drum majors in high school. They have been in a place of leadership at a young age and have learned many lessons from it.

5. Time management

School, work and rehearsals take so much time. Fitting everything in and still having time to yourself takes some serious skill. I even color code my planner.

6. Higher standard of accuracy

In normal classes, an 80 percent is still a decent grade. In band, if you only hit 80 percent of your notes or hit 80 percent of your spots on the field, it'll make for a terrible performance.

7. Respect for authority

There is a chain of command that members learn to follow and respect. They learn to talk to their section leaders first, then drum majors, then staff, then directors. They understand that there is a reason behind everything the leadership does and they do what is expected of them without questioning why.

8. Work ethic

You have to work hard to put on a good show. You have to practice the music, practice the sets, and put in time outside of rehearsal. Band kids understand how to work hard for a good outcome.

9. No handouts

A lot of bands require members to audition for placements. It is understood that you won't just be given a spot. You actually have to work for it and prove that you are worthy of that spot.

10. Used to travel

A lot of business people have to go on business trips. All that travel can be a bit of a shock for some people, but band kids are used to all the traveling. They go on trips for pep gigs and football games and many times the trips are on busses, so they can definitely handle the comfort of a plane.

11. People skills

Being around that many people all the time means you're used to talking to people. Even the most shy people develop great people skills in band.

To all you band kids out there, keep up the good work! It'll pay off one day!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
