We don’t get upset when we can’t eat at a restaurant

We might be siting there, not eating anything or picking at a garden salad, but what you don’t know is that ten minutes before we got to the restaurant we were stuffing our faces with rice, beans, and sweet potatoes. I promise we aren't hungry, and after this we will probably go home and eat a bucket of dates.

We get to eat the really good food

“What do you even eat?” We don’t get annoyed when people ask this because, if anything, we just sound REALLY healthy. “We vegans try and stick to the four main food groups: fruit, sweet potatoes, veggies, and DATES.”

We aren't protein deficient

“If you don’t eat meat, are you like deficient in protein?” No, you silly rabbit, protein is for the weak. Just kidding, protein is important, but most Americans are actually getting more than the recommended serving, which is already a tad high. There are many other healthier, and less fatty, sources to get your protein from.

We have LOTS of energy… even after stuffing our faces

Animal products make people tired because they’re harder for the body to process. We get to eat loads of carbs which give us instant energy. After we eat food, instead of wanting to take a nap, we want to go for a run!

We aren’t dying

Beyond popular belief, we aren't dying from malnutrition. Whoever said that vegans are vitamin deficient didn’t think through what we eat all day long, better known as plants. If more people were willing to eat more plants they’d be just as vitamin sufficient as we are.

We don’t get cancer

Animal protein is high in fat and cholesterol, and closely related with increased risk of heart disease, loss of calcium from bones, and poor kidney function... just to name a few. Also, according to The World Health Organization, there is strong evidence that processed meat causes cancer and it has been categorized as a class 1 carcinogen. Yikes!

We don’t get upset every time someone eats meat

“A burger! Shield your eyes!” Okay, some people might get upset. But I think I speak for the majority when I say that we care about animals, but we don’t cry every time someone eats a burger.

We also don’t cry every time an animal gets hurt

I might be an exception to this only because I am a fragile soul. But generally, being a vegan doesn’t ALWAYS mean that we are emotionally connected to animals.

We have healthy bones

Turns out, you don’t need dairy to get calcium. There is more calcium in a spinach salad than in the same amount of calories from yogurt. Like I said before, animal protein actually diminishes the calcium in bones. Without having dairy we still get more calcium than non-vegans do, and the calcium we eat actually helps our bones!

We never regret how much we eat

Although we do eat a lot of food, what we eat is too healthy to regret. Bag full of dates, not sorry. Crate of blueberries, not sorry. Twenty-something bananas, not sorry. Just happy, full, and ready to move.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
