Awkward silences can be hard to fill. If you are ever in a situation where you need some help stimulating the conversation, these 10 questions can help you to get to know someone better and spark a conversation.

1. Tell me your first favorite song

When I was younger, I remember the first song that I ever learned all the words to: "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" by Kenny Chesney. Most people have a specific song that was their all-time childhood "jam". Whether it's a silly tune or a classic, a conversation is sure to begin after you start discussing #throwback songs.

2. Tell me your current favorite song

I never ask people what their favorite song is. How can anyone chose just one favorite song? Personally, I go through phases with songs; I'll listen to the same song on repeat for a week straight and then move on to a new one. Plus, this will give you a chance to discuss the music that you all are into.

3. Tell me something "geeky/nerdy" about yourself

Everyone likes or has an obsession with something that may be considered "geeky" or "nerdy". These and other such quirks are all what make every individual different and complete. Who knows? You could have the same geek obsession with someone else!

4. Tell me your favorite emoji

It doesn't have to be the emoji someone uses the most frequently, but just the one that speaks to them on an emotional level (they aren't called emojis for no reason, right?).

5. Tell me your life motto/mantra/personal saying

Learning the different philosophies that someone prescribes themselves to can reveal a new side to them that you never knew before.

6. Tell me your favorite snack/junk food

If you really want to make an impact, you could then bring that person the junk food of their choice.

7. Tell me your favorite cartoon

Then you can relive all the greatest moments of your childhood: and every episode of Spongebob Squarepants.

8. Tell me your favorite outfit or piece of clothing to wear

Do they like to be comfy or dressy? Do they have any pieces of clothing that are sentimental to them? You'll never know if you don't ask!

9. Tell me which is your favorite: Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook

This can tell you a lot about someone. Do they like to know every detail of other people's lives, look at pictures, or watch funny videos?

10. Tell me about someone you miss

It could be a long-lost best friend, a parent, an old coach, teacher, anyone. Learning about someone and their past can help you understand who they are in the present.

Now get out there and get to know somebody new!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
