11 Questions Music Majors Are Tired Of Answering

Behold, responses to all of the questions you've ever had for music majors. Because we're sort of over them, tbh.

1. "So like, do you have classes?"

Yes, actually we do. They are real, actual classes. In which we sit in seats and listen to lectures and take notes on subjects such as Music Theory, Music History, 18th Century Counterpoint, Art Song Repertoire, Research Methods, and so, so, so, so, SO many more.

2. "Or like...tests?"

Yes. Plenty of tests. And quizzes. And papers. Oh and on top of that, we have to perform for the faculty twice a year in the form of boards/juries to prove the progress we have made throughout the semester in order for us to not get kicked out of the program (no pressure).

3. "How many instruments do you play?"

Um, one. And it is my major.

4. "There's such a thing as an Oboe Performance major? So random ..."

There's also a cello performance major and a percussion performance major and a voice performance major and a euphonium performance major and a flute performance and a music education major and a music history major and (need I continue?)...

5. "Oh you're a saxophone major! Which one do you play?"

-______- all of them.

6. "Do you have a backup plan?"

I mean, why would I be here if I think I need a backup plan?

7. "I'm taking 18 credit hours and it's so stressful..."

Try 18 credit hours + six-10 hours a week in rehearsal for zero credit hours. And weekend rehearsals. And concerts.

8. "Omg sing something for me right now."

Omg, architect something for me right now.

9. "What kind of music are you in to?"

Oh, boy. Like how to even respond?

10. "What exactly is the point of the conductor? Can't anyone just wave their arms?"

You can receive a doctoral degree in orchestral conducting. Or choral conducting. So no. The answer is no.

11. "So what are you going to do with your life?"

The real answer? Enjoy every moment of it. Because it takes a very particular type of person to major in music, and that person emerges prepared to take on the world and all of its opportunities with open arms and the determination to live a life of vibrance, empowerment and happiness.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
