10 Questions Beginners At The Gym Always Ask

Everyone asks the first question.

1. How do I work this thing?

I think we have all asked this. The machines look complicated to work. So many different parts, but how do they work? We are always looking at the little pictures on the side of the machine for instructions on how to use it.

2. Am I using this right?

Once we get on the machine, we wonder if we’re actually using it properly. We question ourselves what bar to pull, where to sit, how to move the handles. It’s complicated.

3. How do you do that?

We are constantly looking at trainers or other people at the gym and asking, “How do you do that?” They make the hardest exercises look so easy. I once noticed a girl who was on the elliptical for about an hour and told myself, “I could do that,” and let’s just say, I could not do that.

4. What body part does this workout?

I’m always so quick to jump on a machine, but I never check to see what body part I’m working out. Thanks to the little pictures on the machines of the body part highlighted red, I now know.

5. How do I adjust this?

I can’t tell you how many times I tried getting on a machine and it was either too high up or too short. I still do not know how to adjust the dang things. “Guess I won’t be using this machine today."

6. When will I start seeing results?

I think we are all guilty of asking this question. We immediately come back from the gym and stare in the mirror, trying to find a difference. Hate to say, it is not that easy.

7. How long do I work out?

Getting on the treadmill or bike, you are always wondering this. Is there a certain amount of time we are supposed to be on the machine? Half hour it is.

8. Will people look at me weird?

I wondered this at first, but the answer to this question is no. Everybody knows what it’s like to be a beginner at the gym. You won’t be looked at weird. Plus, everyone is minding their own business anyway. No worries.

9. Can you see my sweat?

Obviously working out will make you sweat if you’re really putting in the work. Every time I go to the gym, I’m always wondering if you can see my sweat through my shirt. You may think visible sweat on your clothes is embarrassing, but it’s completely normal.

10. How do I turn this thing on?

Did you know if you just start moving on a machine it will automatically turn on? I’m always looking for a button to press to activate the machine, but it turns out, they activate by movement. You're welcome.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
