10 Pieces Of Advice For Incoming Freshmen

Congrats, you made it. You are going where you dreamed of going and where you worked very hard to get into. Now all of that is in the past, and you start with a clean slate. This is your time to be who you want to be, and leave behind what you don't like. Now is the time to be the best version of yourself. Don't freak out, everyone else is just as nervous as you.

1. Don't miss a night out because you are "lazy"

Just go out. You don't have to look your ultimate best or stay out until 3 a.m. Going out is one of the ways you meet people, get closer to your friends, and cool off from all of the stress of college. You can watch Netflix later.

2. However, feel free to skip a night every once in awhile

Every once in awhile it is okay to stay in. If you need to catch up on your sleep or have a test the next day just stay in. You won't miss anything and you'll go out the next time

3. Share your location

It is very important that you and all your friends share your locations' on Find My Friends. This way, if your friend isn't answering you or they are in trouble you know where they are. Or god forbid they don't know where you are they can find you.

4. Take advantage of your dining plan

Find the best meal offerings at each dining hall on campus, and then eat it as much as you can. You will get bored of this food, but it will make off-campus food taste even better.

5. Don't give up your home friends

Through FaceTime, texting, SnapChatting, and now House Party there is no excuse to not stay in touch with your home friends. You may get all caught up in your new life, but when you come home they are still your friends and sometimes it's nice to talk to someone that you aren't with 24/7. They have known you your whole life they are worth the effort.

6. Go to the gym

Even if you were never a gym person, make yourself go within the first week of school. Explore the gym until you find something that you enjoy doing there. It's not a joke, you are going to eat A LOT of fattening food next year and the only way to avoid what everyone fears (the freshman 15) is by working out alongside eating what you want. It is also the perfect way to blow off steam and take a break from everything.

7. Never miss an extra credit

You may not realize how much you need it in the beginning of a semester but extra credit will always help. In college, professors do not "round up" grades so you may miss the next letter grade by .01% which could be the difference between getting the GPA you want and the GPA you do not want. The extra credits are not difficult, and they make a world of a difference.

8. Take Vitamin C

Even if your immune system has been almost perfect until now, you are still guaranteed to get sick. Once one of your friends get sick it is only a matter of hours before it spreads to all of you. The only thing you can do to try and improve your chances of getting sick is by taking Vitamin C gummies. They taste good and they are healthy for you! Don't wait until its too late.

9. Branch Out

Although it is easy to stay within your small group of friends from the first week of school, branch out. Meet the people living on your floor. Meet the people sitting next to you in class. You have no idea where your best friend may be.

10. Have no regrets

If you think you are going to regret not doing something, just do it. You are only there for 4 years and this experience is for you and you only. Do everything that you want to do, and do not get sucked into anything you do not want to do. Make friends that are worth crying over when you have to say goodbye, make memories worth remembering, and most importantly get grades good enough to tell your parents.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
