10 Pet Peeves

You know what really grinds my gears...

10 Pet Peeves

Everyone has those things that bother them to their core. They all get to us in different ways, but everyone has a top five list of their pet peeves.

1. When people chew gum with their mouths open.

There was a girl in my homeroom all throughout high school that chewed gum like this, and I would get so mad. I would always think in my head to tell her to chew like you have a secret. I really don't want to hear anyone chewing their gum.

2. Bad or slow drivers.

I scream at people when they don't use their turn signals. I would be very happy if the speed limit would just be 50. Turn signals were made for a reason. Please, for the love of all that is good in the world, use it. Tell the rest of the world that you're going to turn or change lanes.

3. When I hold the door for someone and they don't say thank you.

I am very guilty of saying you're welcome when they walk past me to the point where they hear me. On top of that, I hate when people don't look behind them to see if someone is coming and may need the door held for them.

4. When people use "your" instead of "you're."

I can't tell you how many of my friends get mad at me for correcting them. If it's an accident that's one thing, but it's so frustrating! This applies to all grammar issues.

5. When a couple is ordering and one person orders for both of them.

This one is just something that bugs me to no end. Your significant other is capable of doing it for themselves.

6. People who don't wash their hands after they went to the bathroom.

Sometimes I would see a girl walk out of the bathroom in my dorm and she didn't wash her hands and it was so gross. She wouldn't even rinse her hands with hot water. It's not a fix, but it's better than nothing at all and putting germs all over the door handle that everyone in the hall touches.

7. People who always have a story for your story.

I knew a girl like this when I was at school. We would all be at dinner and talking about breaks and someone would explain something that happened and she would have a similar story but all about her. It's normal to relate, but seriously, every time someone has a story you have to make it about you? It gets old and very annoying.

8. Certain words.

Everyone has that one word or group of words that just makes then cringe every time it's said, like "moist." I had a teacher in high school that had a list of words he couldn't stand to hear anyone say and every time someone said one of them he would yell random things to avoid hearing you.

9. When people don't fully spell out words.

It gets on my nerves when people say "u," "ur," "bc," "cuz," or "abt." To me certain ones are okay, but when you can't even spell out the word "you" every day, I have a problem. When you get to high school you should be spelling out your words.

10. When you ask someone to hang out and they never get back to you.

I am not talking about someone you just met. I am talking about when you come home for breaks from school and you text your friends about hanging out and they say they will get back to you but never do. If you don't want to hang out, then say that. Don't say you want to hang out then hang out with every other friend you have.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
