10 People You Meet on a College Campus

No matter where you go, you'll always find the same types of people

If there's anything I've learned from my first semester at college, it's that we haven't quite left behind our high school personas. All of those people you thought you'd escaped after graduation are still here, still walking around campus. Here are 10 of those people you'll probably see when you come to college.

1. The Over-Achiever

The try-hard. The goody-two-shoes. The one who does the most. This person may be an athlete, a top student, is a member of three different clubs, probably pioneered one other club, ran for student government, and logs countless hours in the library studying.

2. The Stoner

There's probably more than one person like this that you know. You might see them disappearing from the dorm for a while only to come back laden down with snacks and laughing about nothing in particular. They'll probably pass out and sleep in the common room for a few hours.

3. The Poli-Sci Know-It-All

The political science major who thinks they know everything there is to know about politics. And since it's an election year, this person probably drove you crazier than normal. They might spend hours lecturing you on the rise and fall of American democracy or the importance of the electoral college or- God forbid- why they voted for Donald Trump.

4. The Athlete

Maybe they were recruited to the school as their star swimmer, runner or soccer star. Or maybe they've just joined a club sport but rugby has become their new calling in life. They're always running from class to practice and constantly inviting the whole dorm to their playoff games. All in all, a fun person to hang around with but they're so busy you never really get the chance to.

5. The Teacher's Pet

This person is very similar to the over-achiever but different in several key ways. The teacher's pet focuses their attention on getting in the teacher's good graces. They might spend all their time in office hours and their hand is almost always the first one raised when there's a question in class.

6. The "Peaked in High School"

Oh boy, there's always one. One person who really just hit their peak in high school . They may have been class president, captain of a sports team, valedictorian or the most popular kid in high school. They're still riding out the high of their high school glory days even now.

7. The "Still Think They're in High School"

It's an understandable mistake for some freshman since high school did just end only a few months ago. It really becomes a problem when you have upperclassmen acting like they're still in high school. They think they can still get away with not doing homework, not participating in class and instigate drama like it's their calling in life. If you're trying to escape high school, you might want to avoid this type of person.

8. The Art Major

Every school has the art majors. The quirky people who always seem just a tad stressed. You'll often find them running around taking pictures for a last minute art project or sitting on the grass sketching something. The decorations in their dorm are always amazing and their Halloween costumes were out of this world.

9. The Valedictorian Gone Wild

They were the perfect kid in high school. They were top of the class, star athletes, class president, maybe even all three. They were they perfect student, the perfect child, perfect in every way. Now that they're away from home, they've let loose and you love to watch the Snapchat updates on Saturday mornings.

10. The Hermit

You actually might not meet this person since they seem to live in their dorm room. You rarely see them at classes and they might only come for exam days. They're never at social events and rarely emerge to eat meals in the dining hall. This is the kind of person you'll see at graduation and say "who was that?"

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
