Summer internships are great. You get awesome experience in a field that you could potentially go into after graduation. You get a firsthand look into what "the real world" will be like in just a couple of more years. And you get to meet some pretty unique people. But no matter where you go, you're bound to meet these 10 types of people at some point during your summer internship.
1. The know-it-all.
Don't pretend like you don't know who I'm talking about. They're the one who walks around thinking that they literally know it all. They have to get the last word into every conversation, and they have to make some kind of comment about everything and anything people could be talking about. But they're an intern just like you, so there's no way they actually know it all. Then again, maybe they do ... but they don't have to flaunt it around all the time.
2. The returner.
These interns loved the company so much, they came back for a second summer. They're the ones that give you comfort and hope that this could work out for you, too. But they're also the ones that seem a little too comfortable with their standing in the company.
3. The quiet one.
You've really only ever heard them say five words: Hi, my name is ______. There's nothing wrong with that at all. While you wish that you could just get a little more out of them at times — like where they're from, what department they're working with for the summer — at least they aren't noisy.
4. The one who's never at their desk.
You met them on your first day passing by their desk, but you haven't seen them there since. Instead, you see them hanging out at other interns' desks, taking laps around the office or making casual conversation with employees in the break room. They're not ones to live stagnant lives in the office. They're always out and about.
5. The networker.
You can always count on the networker to be talking with one of the full time employees about more ways to enhance their intern experience, and they're always looking to make connections with people in any and all departments. They're the first ones to sign up for any event that involves any of the higher ups, and they always make it a point to introduce themselves to anyone who might be able to help them out one day. They're going to be the person we'll all be working for one day.
6. The try hard.
This intern puts in way too many hours seeking the approval of their supervisor — or anyone for that matter. Even though an intern's work hours are capped at 40 hours a week, you know they'll be staying at the office an hour later or taking their work home with them. And if they take two minutes to make a personal phone call, you can definitely expect them to make up those two minutes during their lunch break.
7. The local.
The local is the one who was born and raised in the area. They likely are living at home this summer, but they are your go-to when you're looking for things to do nearby. They've got the inside scoop on all of the "hot spots" to go to after work — places with drink specials, great local restaurants and must-see sights on the weekend.
8. The one who's only in it for the paycheck.
The name speaks for itself. This poor intern doesn't even enjoy what they're doing. They're incredibly good at what they do, and they've definitely got the brains to do it the rest of their life, but there's no passion behind their actions. They're solely hear to make "the big bucks" this summer and get the heck out.
9. The fitness buddy.
This person is your go-to for when you're looking for motivation to get fit for the summer. You can always count on them to drag you to the gym every day after work, and they make you feel guilty when you decide to "take the day off" or decide to eat that third cookie. They push you to be a healthier person, and sometimes you feel like you've lost five pounds just from being around them. Their spirit is great, and they believe that you can definitely get that "beach bod" if you put in the work.
10. The unofficial intern coordinator.
They send out the weekly invites to lunches outside of your typical cafeteria scenery, drinks after work and weekend trips to a nearby city. They like the social aspect of working and are looking to make as many friends as possible. And they're so good at this task that, quite honestly, sometimes you get their events confused with the actual events planned by your actual intern coordinator.
