Being from the south is a blessing.

Like most Southerners, I pride myself from being from the South. Some of the best things come out of our neck of the woods. If you are lucky enough to live here, be thankful. If you haven't experienced the South, this will make you want to.

1. We have the best food

From biscuits and gravy to chicken strips and mashed potatoes, our food cannot be beat.

2. We have the best accents

Our accents can make almost any sentence sound good. Y'all and fixin’ are a normal part of our vocabulary, and it's hard not to love it. Don’t be surprised if we create our own contractions like y'all’ll when we are trying to say “y'all will."

3. We love country music, but we can get down to anything

Tim McGraw and George Strait will always be the greats, but if need be we can learn to love anything that we can dance to.

4. We are never without anything to do

A lot of us are from small towns, meaning that we can have fun with whatever we’ve got. Give us a field and a bonfire and we are good to go.

5. We love football

If it’s a weekend, you can bet that we are somewhere watchin’ the game. We love a good football game and friendly competition, but don’t go trash talking our teams or we may have to “bless a few hearts."

6. Most of us have great manners

We were raised on ma’am and sir, and we will call everyone by these names. We are respectful and we know what our mamas expect from us.

7. We make friends easily

We are very friendly people. It doesn’t take much to connect with a Southerner and once you do, you’ll be friends for life.

8. Our pets are family

We most likely will refer to any of our animals as our children. Whether that be a dog or a horse it's probably our “baby."

9. It’s OK to drink from the water hose

On a hot day you might just see some of us in the yard sippin’ some water from the water hose. Believe it or not, its better that way.

10. We love our country

We love America, and we don't wait until the Fourth of July to show how patriotic we are.

11. People underestimate our intelligence, which gives us the chance to surprise them

Being from the South tends to lead people to believe we may be stupid. Just give us a few minutes, and you won't mistake our cute accents and cowboy boots for stupidity again. There have been very successful people come from the south. We can be pretty darn impressive.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
