As we all know a big part of every college student’s life is Netflix. Sure there is the studying and the homework and the classes, but what every college student will tell you is that most of your free time (and to be honest most of your studying time) will eventually fall victim to some Netflix binging. I am not exception and have watched way too much Netflix than can be considered healthy for a person. Lucky for you, I have watched some weird shows looking for something to binge on weekends and I’ve decided to share them with you all because let’s face it, having nothing to watch blows. Note: All Animes do have an English DUB on Netflix, but I recommend the Japanese Subbed
1. Stranger Things
Trailer [x]
Synopsis: When a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one strange little girl (Netflix, 2016)
Okay so this title is less obscure and more of a wildcard,
as I’m sure you’ve heard about this show in some form or another. If you watch
anything on this list, watch this show! The cast is stellar and the story hooks
you on from the first few minutes and honest to god, it has that horror movie
suspense driving every episode as you try to figure out exactly what is going
on in this small town. Plus there are only 8 episodes! How can you say no to
that?
2. Odd Thomas
Trailer [x]Synopsis:Good vs. evil is served up by an unlikely guy. He not only sees dead people, he can have them over for lunch. (Netflix, 2013)
I know I said 10 Most Obscure "shows” and not movies, but this film absolutely deserves a spot on
any Netflix watch list. The movie follows the protagonist Odd Thomas (real name)
and his knack for solving the unfinished murders of the dead. Think Ghost
Whisperer with more whitty one liners and an awkward but lovable cast. And, if
you just so happen to fall in love with this movie, it’s a book series by Dean
Koontz! One I highly recommend and am currently finishing myself.
3. Lie to Me
Trailer [x]
Synopsis: In this procedural crime drama, Dr. Cal Lightman helps the police by using his knowledge of human behavior to determine whether a person is lying (Netflix, 2010)
I’m a sucker for a good crime show (just ask my parents I
could watch Law and Order SVU for days),
but one thing that always gets me is that they always follow the same formula
or another. Lie to Me brings something new to the table. The show follows Dr.
Lightman as he uses his keen skills of perception to detect microexpressions
that signal when a person is lying or not. I think my favorite part about this
show is that Cal Lightman is such a complex character and no one really knows
what is going through his head. Think House but with cops. The cast is stellar
and the show’s plots keep you wanting more and more.
4. Dark Matter
Trailer [x]
Synopsis: After waking up aboard a derelict spaceship with no memories, the crew of the Raza investigates the mystery of their identities and destination. (Netflix, 2015)
Dark Matter is one of those Syfy shows you hear about and
are generally skeptical if it’s worth a watch or not. I skipped pass this show
so many time that the only reason I watched it was because I was tired of
seeing it pop up in my recommended list and OH MY GOD. Like this show spends so
much time developing its cast and making you fall in love with each and every one
of them while also making you question their motives. If you like space, a
lovable cast and mystery, this show is for you.
5. K
Trailer [x]
Synopsis:Yashiro Isana has lived a relatively ordinary, simple life. He lives in the technologically advanced Shizume City and attends Ashinaka High School, a notable high school that is located on an island just outside the areas. Yashiro is friendly with everyone. Nothing seems wrong about him, except perhaps his habit of forgetting where his school-issued PDA is. However, nothing normal has been happening since the recent murder of Tatara Totsuka, prominent member of the infamous HOMRA. No one knows who exactly killed him but the man responsible bears an uncanny, identical appearance to Yashiro. Seeking vengeance, the Red Clansmen of HOMRA set out to get Yashiro and kill him. Everyone suspects that Yashiro is the murderer. (Wikipedia, 2012)
Okay if it’s not obvious from the image, this is an anime
and as such it is not going to be for everyone. But if you are into anime (or
are willing to give it a try) K is a definite contender for your next show. The
story follows Yashiro Isana who suddenly becomes the target of the two gangs in
control of the city after a video oh him killing one of their members leaks on
the internet. The kicker is that Yashiro has no recollection of this happening.
He finds himself trapped between a deadly war with only a few allies at his
back. This anime is beautifully animated with vivid colors and epic fight
scenes. Of course there is some tasteless fan service (something that is to be
expected with an action anime such as this), but you also fall in love with the
members of these gangs and really feel for them (MY HEART MAN AFTER WATCHING
THIS SHOW).
6. Awake
Trailer [x]
Synopsis: After Surviving a car crash, detective Michael Britten travels between different versions of reality, being forced to grasp two versions of his life (Netflix, 2012)
This show is trippy. It will have you doubt your every
thought right along with the main character, while you’re in awe of the interesting
camera work and crisscrossing timelines. It’s a crime drama with a hint of
scifi. If you like shows that make you think, definitely give this one a try. It was an enjoyable experience and literally had me watching all night.
7. Moribito
Trailer [x]Synopsis: Female warrior and master of the spear, Balsa, becomes bodyguard to Prince Chagum to protect him from his menacing father, Emperor Mikado (Netflix, 2007)
This one is another anime and an older one at that. While it
doesn’t have the amazing animation modern technology has granted recent animes,
Moribito is timeless and beautifully
done. The colors are come to life on the
screen and there is so much nature to be seen from this world. To top it all
off, Balsa, the protagonist, is female badass who is in no way sexualized. She kicks
ass in both a practical and extremely entertaining manner with a mysterious
backstory to boot. If this all seems a little boring, the show also has a
supernatural element to it!
8. The Finder
Trailer [x]
Synopsis: This offbeat detective drama centers on an Army veteran whose rare talent for finding people makes him vital to criminal investigations (Netflix, 2012)
The Finder is one of those shows that’s just silly fun. The
cast is hilarious, the plot lines are bizarre and creative, and it’s just the
show you need after a long day and you need a laugh. Not to mention the main
character has a mental disability and is still a complete hero. Let’s hear it
for mental disability representation!
9. Nana
Trailer [x]
Synopsis: Two girls who share the same name — one an ambitious punk rocker and the other a lovelorn follower— arrive in Tokyo for a new start (Netflix, 2006)
Okay, last anime for this list! Nana would normally not be
something I’m drawn to in either an anime or even a show. This show is a Slice
of Life type of anime, meaning it deals with real life situations and
problem. Despite this, Nana pulled me in
with its two heroines of the same name. One is the typical girly girl who just wants
to fall in love and the other is a hardcore rocker and while they seem like
they would completely oppose each other, they complement one another. This
anime really empowers women whether they fall into the stereotypical role or
not and it does so in a heartfelt story that makes you want to cheer for these
girls. Sadly, it does have an open ending due to the creator having injured
herself some years prior, but it’s definitely worth a watch regardless.
10. Saving Grace
Trailer [x]
Synopsis:Following a car crash, a self-destructive detective gets a chance at redemption from her “last chance angel,” but she has difficulty accepting it. (Netflix, 2009)
Of all the shows on this list, Saving Grace is the most left
field. It is a crime drama, but it has overly religious themes to it. Now, I’m
not one for religion (like at all),but this show really digs deep in the
troubled hero. Grace is about as imperfect as you can get. She drinks, swears,
and does many dubious things despite being a sworn officer of the law. Even if
religion isn’t your thing, the show is a great character study in redemption
and asking yourself if one truly deserves it even after all the harm they may
have done in life.
Okay guys, that's all I got for you. Hopefully you found this list interesting and decide to give some of these shows a shot. They are all sealed with my personal experience gurantee! Happy watching!
