Finding a movie on Netflix is like looking for a friend. Some make you laugh, some are just stupid, and every now and then, you find a real, true, gem. Lucky for you, I’ve gone through that faith-testing experience of flipping through bad movie after bad movie in the "Because you watched..." sections of Netflix so that you don’t have to! Here are 10 movies on Netflix available to stream right now that you’ll actually want to watch.
1. "Tracks" (2013)
This drama is amazing because it’s not only based on a true story, but it also features a strong female lead (Mia Wasikowska), an adorable dog, and camels. CAMELS. "Tracks" tells the true story of Roybn Davidson, the woman who walked 1,600 miles across the Australian desert in the ‘70s. It’s pretty heavy, but if independent women and camels light your fire, then this film is for you.
2. "The Fundamentals of Caring" (2016)
"The Fundamentals of Caring" will make you laugh and then feel guilty about laughing. The film tells the story of a road trip taken by a terminally ill teen (Craig Roberts) and his caregiver (Paul Rudd). Okay, sounds depressing, but it’s actually super hilarious and inspiring. Plus, it stars Selena Gomez, and she’s hot.
3. "The Princess Bride" (1987)
Need I say more? I only put this on the list in case you lost your VHS (or no longer own a VCR).
4. "Bring It On" (2000)
Okay, this one isn't winning any Academy Awards, but "Bring It On" is a high school classic that is 100 percent guaranteed to make you feel good. Plus, it will remind you of everything you loved and hated about high school and the early 2000’s.
5. "Sixteen Candles" (1984)
Fact: a Molly Ringwald high school film is always a good idea. Sixteen Candles is like Bring It On, except you probably didn’t go to high school in the ‘80s, so you don’t have to cringe as much.
6. "American Beauty" (1999)
Stalking, infidelity, teenage seduction: "American Beauty" has it all. This film tells a disturbing story of a suburban family that will surely give you the shivers. It’s like a bad car wreck -- you won’t be able to take your eyes off of it even though you’re horrified. Spoiler: the dad (Kevin Spacey) has sexual fantasies about his daughter’s friend. Ew.
7. "Silver Lining’s Playbook" (2012)
If you didn’t already see this film in theaters when it came out, now’s the time to stream it. It features Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and a messy divorce. What more could you want in a drama?
8. "The Switch" (2010)
"The Switch" is the story of Wally (Jason Bateman), who accidentally switches his sperm for his best friend Kassie’s (Jennifer Aniston) sperm donor, thus unintentionally becoming the father of his best friend’s baby. Okay, who ever said that romantic comedies need to be believable? "The Switch" is one of Jennifer Aniston’s lesser known rom-coms, but it does not disappoint.
9. "Good Will Hunting" (1997)
If you haven’t already seen this classic, now’s your chance. "Good Will Hunting" tells the story of a deeply troubled mathematician (Matt Damon) and his therapist (Robin Williams). Don’t worry, I also hate math, but it’s still a good movie.
10. "Like Sunday, Like Rain" (2014)
"Like Sunday, Like Rain" describes the touching relationship between a lonely child prodigy (Julian Shatkin) and his babysitter (Leighton Meester). This is a must watch for any "Gossip Girl" fan because this film stars Meester post-Blair Waldorf, and she’s just as incredible to watch portraying a completely different character.
While Netflix has some disappointing titles such as "The Human Centipede 2" and "The Starving Games," this list just goes to show that with a little grunt work, true gems are readily available. Happy streaming.
