Even though we pay for Netflix monthly, it's pretty easy to go through all of the movie titles that we can recognize from playing in theaters. I was a little weary of watching movies I hadn't heard of before, but I quickly realized I was wrong. Whenever I find a gem of a movie on Netflix, I find the highest mountain and scream about it because everyone needs to watch it. So, here I am, metaphorically yelling from my web-mountain about some movies you just can't miss on Netflix:
1. One Small Hitch
Who doesn't love the classic "we're-totally-pretending-to-be-in-love" story? It's just one of those tropes where you know what's going to happen and you're rooting for the main characters the entire time. Josh and Molly return home for a family wedding and pretend to be engaged in order to fulfill Josh's dying father's last wish. I've watched this movie 7 times since November. I'm not ashamed.
2. Leap Year
I love Amy Adams. So, when I saw that she was in this movie, I had to give it a shot. Now, what's better than a movie featuring Amy Adams shot in Ireland? That's right, nothing. The whole premise of the movie is Amy's character is trying to find her boyfriend on Leap Day, so that she can propose to him (an old tradition in Ireland). Along the way, she learns a few lessons. I've also watched this movie about three times in a short amount of time.
3. Elizabethtown
Now, I'm not too sure of this movie's popularity, but I had never heard of it before, which really isn't saying much. It stars Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst and I'm not usually one for ambiguous endings, but I did enjoy this one.
4. In Your Eyes
Okay, this movie is SO cool. The main characters have never met one another, but they have this unbreakable connection (it actually kind of reminds me of Sense8, if you've ever watched that, but it only has two people and lot less confusing storyline).
5. October Baby
After some health setbacks, the main character in this film decides she wants to try to find her birth mother to learn about her past and figure out her future. She learns some surprising things that shake her and it's an emotional journey for everyone involved. It has a Hallmark-feel, but who doesn't enjoy that from time to time?
6. Christian Mingle
I'm just going to get it out there and tell you, yes, the lead is Gretchen Wieners. But don't let that be the only reason you watch it. The main character of the film is feeling down about not having a significant other and decides to try Christian Mingle, with the wrong thing in her heart. She learns about herself and her relationship with God. Was it cheesy? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Yes!
7. After the Ball
Super cute, kinda cheesy, still enjoyable. The main character is strong, independent female who's just part of another Cinderella story, but SHE'S the fashion designer in this scenario. She disguises herself as a man so she can be taken seriously in the fashion industry, but learns some secrets and get herself into some funny situations.
8. Hush
I'm literally not a horror movie person. Just ask Katie and Paul (I'm so sorry for you having to put up with me that night). But I could actually handle this movie (hardly). And what I think is really cool is that the main character was deaf. When do you see something like that represented in a horror movie? If you can handle horror films, watch this! And if you can't, have Netflix and another tab open and just be ready to switch.
9. Liberal Arts
Now, I may have wanted to watch this because I go to a liberal arts school and thought the title was amusing, but you know who's in this movie? Josh Radnor (yeah, Ted Mosby for all you HIMYM fans) and Elizabeth Olsen (as in younger sister to the famous Olsen twins). Was I happy with this movie? Absolutely not. But it's a good movie. I believe that as long as a movie makes me feel passionately one way or the other, it's done it's job.
Now, while I'm not too entirely sure on how popular all of these movies are, I know I had to dig through Netflix to find them. So, you can do it, too. It was also pretty disappointing to find out some of the movies I wanted to include on this list are no longer available to stream (or anywhere to be found!). Now, I'm going to be honest: I found Pocahontas II while I was skimming through my list to write this article and I'm seriously debating watching that instead of sleeping. Or watching One Small Hitch for the 8th time (second time this week).
