10 Must-See Movies Of 2017
Iowa State Daily

2017 looks like the year for movies, ladies and gentlemen. There are so many potentially amazing movies coming out that it'd be impossible for me to list them all. Superheroes, action adventure, and remakes seem to dominate the list this year. With so many movies coming out it can be difficult to determine which movies you should see. While I'm no movie expert, here are a select handful of the many movies coming out in 2017 that I'm excited to see.

1. Kong: Skull Island (March 10, 2017)

Set in the 1970s, this film focuses on a group of explorers who go searching deep within an uncharted island to find the mythical beast known as Kong. This version of King Kong which is the biggest we've ever seen him looks bad-ass. The cinematography is spectacular and the movie boasts some notable actors like Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and Samuel L. Jackson. The trailer alone has made this movie one of the most anticipated films of 2017.

2. Beauty and the Beast (March 17, 2017)

A tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast is a beloved classic by many so it makes sense that people are so excited for this live-action remake. Following the animated movie, Belle (Emma Watson) is taken prisoner by the Beast (Dan Stevens) in an enchanted castle and must learn to look beyond appearances and see people for who they truly are. The animation and filmography are breathtaking. The casting choices are amazing. This classic story is shaping up to be one of 2017's best movies.

3. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (March 24, 2017)

Probably the least well-known on this list, this retelling of the tale of King Arthur will not disappoint. This film is as much about the story as it is how the story is told. The cinematography is unique and the fact that Guy Ritchie is directing is sure to make the movie a memorable experience. This film sports an amazing cast that includes Charlie Hunnam (King Arthur), Jude Law, Annabelle Wallis, and Eric Bana. This lesser known movie that features gigantic elephants, revenge plots, some amazing battle scenes and Charlie Hunnam in the title role is sure to be one of the best films of 2017.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26, 2017)

Personally, I love the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Yes, the newest movie wasn't all that great but this new movie has hope. Returning to the screen is the infamous Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who must find the legendary Trident of Poseidon in order to stop his old enemy Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his ghost pirates. Orlando Bloom is reprising his role as Will Turner, the blacksmith-turned-pirate so you know this movie is going to be great.

5. Wonder Woman (June 2, 2017)

I will admit it. At first I was skeptical of Gal Gadot being cast as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. After seeing her in Batman v. Superman and watching the trailer for Wonder Woman, I'm confident she was the right choice for the role. The movie starts with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) washing up on the island of Themyscira and telling Diana about World War I. She decides to leave her home and help end the war early thus starting her on her path towards becoming Wonder Woman.

6. Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7, 2017)

Nobody is more surprised than me to see this movie on this list. When I heard they were rebooting Spider-Man (again), I was sure it would flop. We've already scene this story twice, do we really need to see it again? The answer is yes. First appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) brought a down-to-earth, realistic view of what it would be like to be a teenager-turned-superhero. I mean who wouldn't fangirl at meeting Thor, Iron Man or Captain America? This movie will focus on Peter's attempt at balancing his life as an ordinary high school student with is crime-fighting as Spider-Man.

7. Blade Runner 2049 (October 5, 2017)

This sequel to the iconic Blade Runner might be the most scrutinized movie of 2017. Reprising his role as Rick Deckard, Harrison Ford will star alongside Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto. Little has been revealed about the film's plot but fans are still excited to get another chance to explore the world of Blade Runner once again. Whether it's a smashing success or a box-office flop is yet to be seen, but either way it's one of 2017's most anticipated movies.

8. Thor: Ragnarok (November 3, 2017)

Personally, I'm REALLY excited for this movie. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) had a vision/hallucination that basically told Thor that he needs to get back to Asgard and stop what's coming. Though they never mention it by name, what's coming is Ragnarok, the "twilight of the gods". Ragnarok is basically a set of events that lead up to a giant battle and the death of many key Norse gods. Leaning on the heavier side, this third installment will be a game changer. The impending apocalypse is going to provide lots of dramatic moments, great special effects, and some kick-ass fight scenes. Plus, Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is so to appear in this film along with fan favorite Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

9. Justice League (November 17, 2017)

Following up Batman v. Superman, Justice League finds Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) searching for meta-humans to help him stop whatever he saw coming in his vision. Superheroes showing up in the film to aide Batman include Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher)...and Superman (Henry Cavill). They will team up to fight Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds), however, I expect there will be some foreshadowing of Darkseid at some point in the film. There's lots of pressure on DC to make this film a hit so here's ho

ping that people's expectations aren't so high that they can only be disappointed.

10. Star Wars: Episode VIII (December 15, 2017)

While little has been released about Episode VIII, it is already shaping up to be one of the best movies of 2017. Episode VII left many unanswered questions that we are all hoping Episode VIII will finally answer. For example, who are Rey's parents? How did Kylo Ren get involved with the Knights of Ren? Will we get to see flashbacks? Will Luke and Leia make it out of this movie alive? With these and many more questions, it's easy to see why this movie is becoming one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. (Also, it's Star Wars...do we need any other reason to go see it?)

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
