In May, I landed this awesome internship and after my first week I had no idea what I should do to spruce up my desk. I already had the decorations and such, but I was never prepared for the unexpected which my internship and always about the unexpected and changes. I found myself in countless situations where I wasn’t prepared and had to improvise, and it actually turned out pretty well. Anyhow, over the last month I realized there were ten must have items that every working gal should have on her desk in order to be prepared for the unexpected at work.

1. Cell Phone Charger

What’s worse than having your phone die in the middle of the day; whether you’re using it to make plans after work or sending vital emails and work related plans, having a mobile is crucial for the working world now a days. I personally keep my USB cord plugged into my computer or make sure that portable charger is charged and ready to go if I’m out at an event or meeting.

2. Flip-Flops or Flats

There is no way I’d make it through a whole day wearing sensible heels. I definitely urge any working woman to bring a pair flats or sandals to work so after a long day or even during the day, you still look professional but comfortable.

3. Stain Remover

Spill that Caramel Macchiato all over that new blouse you just purchased? Have no fear a simple Tide to-go pen will fix any stain related problem.

4. Feminine Products

Because no girl wants THAT kind of problem.

5. Gum or Breath Mints

I don’t think anyone would want to talk to someone with horrible coffee breath. Make sure you keep some mints or gum for those meetings and/ or events.

6. Hand Sanitizer

Germs spread quickly in the workplace and schools. A small bottle can go a long way and will definitely be your best defense against the glue.

7. Reusable Water Bottle

Hydration is key! Water will keep you refreshed and energized throughout the work day. Re-useable water bottles (BPA free, I recommend) are not only easier on your wallet but it’s good for the environment!

8. Hair Ties

During work, there has been many times my hair has been either in my face or it’s extremely hot. It’s always a safe bet to keep a hair tie around your desk in case you want to switch up your hair style for a more comfortable look.

9. Lip Balm and Mascara

There have been plenty of times after work that I’ve been out and about and want to look presentable because you’ll never know who you’ll meet. I definitely recommend to keep mascara and lip balm around to keep your look fresh and effortless.

10. Snacks

I eat a lot - well I certainly snack in between meals and there’s nothing worse than working long hours with nothing to snack on while you’re busy. Healthy snacks to keep around your desk include, nuts, dried fruit, granola bars or oatmeal packets and anything else your little heart desires!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
