Everyone has heard about all the classic musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, and Wicked, but you have to wonder, how many are out there that people have never heard about? With the rise of Hamilton, musicals are once again becoming a big topic in the world. Here are a few musicals that you might not have seen yet, but you really should.

1. "The Bridges of Madison County"

My Favorite Song: "It All Fades Away"

"There are places that I've traveled, And so many things I've seen, And it all fades away but you."

The Bridges of Madison County is about a woman who is left at her home alone for a few days. A traveler comes and asks for directions to the covered bridge. They instantly connect, and this starts a short but strong love story. This creates problems that last for a long time after it's over.

2. "Bring it On: The Musical"

My Favorite Song: "It's All Happening"

"Imagine the lights, imagine the people, imagine us in the middle of the crowd! Imagine the fame! Imagine the fortune! It's all happening!"

Bring it On is about a high school girl who has it all made. She has a hot boyfriend, great friends, and is the captain of an award-winning cheer squad. Then she gets mysteriously sent to a new school that doesn't have a cheer squad. The musical focuses on her rise back to the top and realizing that friendship is more important than winning.

3. "Dear Evan Hansen"

My Favorite Song: "To Break In A Glove"

"You do the hard thing and that's the right thing. Yeah, that's the right way... to break in a glove."

A rising hit musical, Dear Evan Hansen is about a teen with social anxiety. After a classmate commits suicide, he creates a story where this student was a very close friend rather than a bully. While trying to comfort the student's grieving parents, he ends up becoming a viral sensation and essentially gets everything he ever wanted. He has to decide if he should continue this lie, or if he will risk everything he has gotten to be truthful.

4. "The Heathers"

My Favorite Song: "Beautiful"

"Hold your breath and count the days, we're graduating soon. College will be paradise if I'm not dead by June!"

The Heathers is about a senior in high school who finds out that "fitting in" isn't what it's cracked up to be. After meeting the new student who is a mega bad boy, things go downhill fast. As love leads to murder with fabricated suicides and eventually a bomb, she realizes that there doesn't have to be all these cliques. She becomes a strong message for the idea that everyone can get along, no matter your clique.

5. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"

My Favorite Song: "The Origin of Love"

"So we wrapped our arms around each other, trying to shove ourselves back together. We were making love, making love"

In a very compact explanation, Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of a person from Germany who undergoes a sex change that doesn't turn out correctly. She becomes a well- known rock star that lives in Kansas. Her journey for fame, love, and her identity is told in this musical.

6. "In the Heights"

My Favorite Song: "Breathe"

"Straighten the spine, smile for the neighbors. Everything's fine, everything's cool. The standard reply, 'Lots of tests, lots of papers,' smile, wave goodbye and pray to the sky."

In the Heights is a new hit musical, told using a mixture of English and Spanish. The story focuses on a few different groups of people from the community Washington Heights. This community and its residents face constant hardship. Then the possibility of a winning lottery ticket comes into view and could change all of their lives. This musical teaches us lessons about chasing your dreams and supporting the community that got you there.

7. "The Little Mermaid"

My Favorite Song: "Poor Unfortunate Souls"

"It's sad but true. If you want to cross the bridge, my sweet you've got the pay the toll. Take a gulp and take a breath, go ahead and sign the scroll!"

The Little Mermaid musical is adapted from the Disney movie, The Little Mermaid. You will hear a few songs from the movie, but many are added to help complete the storyline. The story becomes about a girl who defies her father, who ends up trading his freedom for hers, and how all of her friends and family try to help her accomplish what she set out to do. The musical adds some humor that makes the story relevant to all ages.

8. "Matilda: The Musical"

My Favorite Song: "When I Grow Up"

"If I think the ending is fixed already, I might as well be saying I think that it's ok! And that's not right!"

Another musical interpretation of a well-known movie, Matilda is about a little girl whose life isn't going great. Throughout the musical, she discovers her extraordinary powers, which she uses to stand up to the adults that are treating her wrong. She teaches her favorite teacher, as well as her classmates, that if something's not going right, you have to stand up and fix it for yourself.

9. "Shrek: The Musical"

My Favorite Song: "I Know It's Today"

"I know, he'll appear and his armor will be blinding! As shining as his perfect teeth and manly hose. He'll propose on one knee and our pre-nup will be binding! About time we set the wedding date! Day number 958. I know it's today. He'll show up today."

While Shrek the Musical follows the general storyline of the movie, it is an experience like no other. It still follows an ogre who goes on a quest to get his home back and gets a little hung-up in a story of forbidden love and secrets. But, in this version, we get to see both Shrek and Fiona before they began living on their own. We see why even more why they were meant to be together. The musical also focuses more on the fairytale creatures and their place in helping to defeat the horrible tyrant.

10. "Something Rotten"

My Favorite Song: "Right Hand Man"

"There's no problem that's too big when you're married that's the gig so, don't be a sexist pig!"

Something Rotten is a hilarious musical that takes place in the Renaissance era. Shakespeare is all the rage, and the main characters don't really think he should be. In an attempt to take his place, they ask a soothsayer for advice. He tells them that the new big thing will be singing, dancing, and acting all at the same time, which he tells them is called a musical! They get to see that creating something for people to praise is not as easy as they had hoped.

Each musical on this list is completely different from the previous, but the one thing they all have in common is amazing singing, dancing, and a great message that everyone can take home. Go out and think about seeing a musical that you've never heard of today! You may find that one that sounded incredibly boring managed to entertain and captivate you the entire time.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
