College has only made me realize that watching a movie is equally as much fun as going out. I especially have grown to like movies that are centered around some of my passions in life. I am a journalism major so it's no surprise that I can't resist a movie centered around the life of one. My list of favorite movies starring women journalists is jam-packed with hilarious and lovable plots of undercover and strong-willed women who put their all into their careers. This is an idea that I find very refreshing and modern for the women of our current society. So here's a list of my favorite comedic, romantic and inspiring movies about women involved in the field of journalism that will probably make you laugh out loud hysterically or cry because your love life is nonexistent.
Never Been Kissed (1999)
Drew Barrymore is not Josie Grossy anymore. As a junior copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times, she faces the challenge of going undercover at her former high school, as she seeks information about today's teen culture. It is a hilarious comedy that shows the struggles of her trying to fit into the popular clique while also managing a love life with one of her teachers.
Trainwreck (2015)
This romantic comedy featuring Amy Schumer as a writer for a men's magazine revolves around the rollercoaster love life of her and a sports medicine doctor (Bill Hader) that she meets after being assigned to write a story about him. Schumer is nothing short of hilarious and will probably make you pee your pants laughing.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
Kate Hudson's character Andie Anderson is a writer for Composure Magazine who wishes to be assigned more important and serious stories. She starts to write an article on How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, little does she know that the man she is tricking/falling for is also in on a bet with employees at his advertising agency that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. It is a romantic comedy and one of my personal favorites.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Want to feel the struggles of working at a high fashion publication in New York City? Then grab a warm cup of coffee and turn the Devil Wears Prada on. Anne Hathaway plays Andy Sachs, a young graduate that lands a job with one of the most ruthless Editor- In- Chiefs of a fashion magazine called Runway. The movie is filled with drama and romance. In the end, Hathaway's character learns the value of being true to oneself despite the pressures we each feel from our peers to conform.
13 Going on 30 (2004)
Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) wants nothing more to be popular, at the age of 13 fitting in is everything. With a little bit of magic, she wakes up as a 30-year-old women who works at Poise, the favorite magazine of hers when she was a teenager. She finds out that this life she so badly wanted to live is not representative of the person that she was when she was 13.
Life or Something Like it (2002)
What would you do if you suddenly found out that you only had seven days to live? That is exactly what happens to successful TV reporter, Lanie Kerrigan (Angelina Jolie) after she interviews a self-proclaimed prophet. The movie focuses around her journey as she tries to discover what the meaning of her life is, all while learning to fall in love.
The Help (2011)
One of the greatest movies of possibly all time, The Help is centered around a journalist, Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Emma Stone) who writes a book from two black maids, Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) and Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) points of view. It is a heartfelt movie that shares the issues of racism that were present during the Civil Right's Movement. It is a definite must-see.
Young Adult (2011)
I'm sure we all have that one friend who peaked in high school, if so you should call her a Mavis Gary. Young Adult tells the story of Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) trying to relive her glory days, as she searches for content to finish her last book in her young series of young adult novels. She returns to her hometown to try to revive a past relationship and only ends up realizing that she no longer can live in the past.
Movies have the power to take us to different places. Where will your next adventure take you?
