Block Island is one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast (in my biased opinion), but a lot of tourists don't get past going to state beach and committing moving violations on rental mopeds. Here's a few other ways to spend your visit.
1. Walk the breakwall in Old Harbor
As long as you're careful on the rocks (especially if you have kids with you) trekking down to the end of the breakwall can be a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main beach. Climb the tower (again, carefully), jump off the end (carefully) or just watch the sunrise over the harbor.
2. Explore the Ocean View Ruins
There are a few fragments of the hotel outside of the Pavilion, but if you're adventurous, you can push through the overgrowth past the garden and find bigger parts of the ruined foundations. Wear long pants.
3. Have a Picnic on the Beach
Why spend money on overpriced restaurants when you could spend it on semi-overpriced takeout with a beautiful view?
4. Visit the Enchanted Forest
5. Eat at The Harbor Grill*
The food is amazing, and word is on the street that the waitresses are cute.
*This is shameless self-promotion.
6. Dory's Cove
If you want to go to the beach but can't handle the hustle and bustle of State beach, there are some perfect spots on the west side.
7. Watch the sunset from the North Light
I mean, this one isn't exactly a well-kept secret, but it's still definitely worth the hike. Sunrise is great too!
8. The Maze
If you're around in late spring (think April/May) you can trek up to Clayhead and see thousands of daffodils in bloom. This was my favorite thing in the world as a little kid growing up on the island, and it still kind of is.
9. Visit the nude beach!
Speaking of fun places to take your child! Yes, it exists, and it's a mile or so down from Mohegan Bluffs. Go wild.
10. Build a bonfire
Go to the police station beforehand to get a permit!
