It is presumptuous that a college student even has time to watch an entire 90-minute movie, especially on the quarter system. However, take a break from the "Grey’s Anatomy" binge session round two, pause "Friends," and give these movies a chance. You will still ace your tests and keep your cumulative GPA, but give yourself a break and take some mental down time. With a melting pot of humor, love, and always a little sadness to get the plot rolling, these movies can act as a getaway from your world to work a little harder or just have a well-deserved laugh.
1. "That Awkward Moment"
While Zac Efron is the main character of this movie, the newfound cinema favorites Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan
2. "Two Night Stand"
A list of must see movies will always have repeats; good actors are not one-shot wonders. Miles Teller makes a second appearance in this cute love story, with a comedic script and
3. "This is Where I Leave You"
A little bit of a more serious movie, "This Is Where I Leave You" is about adulthood. It uses the Altman family to strike every hardship in life and then twist the knife a little deeper for cinema's sake. This movie takes death, infidelity, fertility, religion, childhood pasts and love, and shoves it into one household of four grown children and their widowed mother. It sounds intense, but I promise it is worth the watch. With heart-tugging family relationships, it makes an only child (like me) wish I had siblings, while portraying the cold hard truth of being an adult and how life does not stop when you can’t catch up. With this star-studded cast, "This Is Where I Leave You" is dramatic in the best way.
4. Nicholas Sparks Movies
I could have added each individual movie that Nicholas Sparks has written, but that would have taken all the movie slots. While we know the classics like "The Notebook," "The Longest Ride," "The Last Song," and "A Walk to Remember," I urge you to branch out and watch his other movies. "The Lucky One," "Nights in Rodanthe," "The Choice," "Safe Haven"are a few worth mentioning. For the sappy and predictable love stories that we all fall victim too, they provide a much-needed break from the college lifestyle of library visits and midterms without a curve. Love stories are a nice vacation from your seriously unpredictable college love life. Also, if you really have time, read the books! They are better than the movies.
5. "The Devil Wears Prada"
Classic, and most likely already on the watched list, but watch it again. The working world is brutal and Miranda Priestly makes that very clear. Watch this movie again and again and get inspired to fight for your career, do every job to the best of your ability and eventually life will figure itself out along the way. It is also a very nice bonus to see the amazing styles and hairstyles you know you could never pull off. Take my advice and re-watch The Devil Wears Prada.
6. "The Other Woman"
This is one of my absolute favorites. The plot is much more about friendship than love. Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann are a match made in heaven and have a friendship that you always dreamed of (i.e. braiding each others hair and taking about the “right” Brazilian wax to get while listening to a remix of Cyndi Lauper). Kate Upton’s movie debut makes you want to go to the
7. "Because I Said So"
A little bit of a throwback to 2007, but trust me, you will not dispute its placement on this list after watching. This movie is worth it. Inadvertently feeding the craving of wishing I had
8. "About Time"
The most accurate description I can use to tell you about this movie is that it's sweet and heartwarming. About Time is about love and family (like most of these movies), as well as living in the moment. This movie encompasses life in a way most do not. The future and the past are not under your control. Live in the moment and enjoy what is in front of you. The quirky and adorable Domhnall Gleeson will "woo" you in a way you did not deem possible, and Rachel McAdams will always
Of course, there are more than eight movies that every college girl should see. Instead of a list full of "Clueless" and "Mean Girls," watch some of these films that will hopefully become classics!
