Halloween isn't just a season for spooky movies! Below are five neat horror TV shows to check out for the Halloween season!
Heads up: all of these shows will contain graphic violence, language, sexual nudity, and blood/gore. A warning before viewing!
Outcast (Since 2016)
Kyle Barnes has the threat of demons looming over his head since he was younger. Teaming up with Reverend Anderson, Kyle seeks answers and redemption from his family and peers while uncovering secret evils.
So far, I've only watched the first three episodes (I'm really bad at keeping up with stuff), but the stakes are really high for Kyle. He has many obstacles from his family matters and history to social ostracization to the supernatural threats that threaten him constantly. This TV show is based off the comic of the same name by Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta!
Available on Amazon Prime!
The Exorcist (Since 2016)
This TV series is a sequel to the classic 1973 of the same name. Father Thomas Ortega and excommunicated priest Marcus Keane come together to purge the evil presence that torments the Rance family.
I'm a sucker for Fox series, and they really brought some justice to this series. The character development and themes (e.g. homosexuality, relationships, recovery) addressed really shine through. The special effects, ambiance, and approach to the premise are modern and refreshing.
It is currently running on TV, and is not available anywhere online right now. If you have an on-demand service, that could be your best bet.
Penny Dreadful (2013 - 2016)
Just finished my first season of this show, and it did not disappoint. The story is a blend of characters from classic horror novels, such as "Pictures of Dorian Grey," Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," and Bram Stoker's "Dracula." The first season revolves around Vanessa Ives and Malcolm Murray soliciting the help of various people to rescue Mina, Vanessa's friend and Malcolm's daughter, from the clutches of vampires.
A lot of elements and characterization goes on in this show! There are some characters you'll love, some you may hate, and some you'll have mixed feelings. But the costumes, effects, and atmosphere of the show are unbelievable.
Available on Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime!
The Strain (since 2014)
A team from the Center of Disease Control investigates people who came back to life after mysteriously dying on a plane. However, it turns out to be a viral disease that causes vampirism, linking them to an ex-vampire hunter and an old menace that threatens humanity.
The Strain brings back some fresh horror elements we're familiar with: paranoia, suspense, blood/gore, and monsters. It's like 40 Days of Night but in New York, and it's spreading. I've seen season one, but if the seasons lend more to the characters than plot, then it's earned its place in TV right now!
Season 3 is currently running on TV! Available on Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime!
There are more horror-based TV shows out there, but above are just some of my selections! What do you guys recommend? Find what you like and enjoy!
