This summer, I decided to stay at school and get some credit hours out of the way. I did not really know what to expect because it is my first summer spent away from home. Here are ten misconceptions I had about taking classes in the summer.
1. It will be easier than other semesters.
Wrong. Summer courses are the exactly the same as your standard ones during fall and spring semester. Be mentally prepared to focus.
2. I won't know anyone in my classes.
3. Going to only a few classes a week will be nice.
It is so much harder to be motivated to go to one class of the day.
4. Everyone takes summer classes.
You will get on Instagram while you are on hour 10 of studying, and see all of your best friends having the time on their life traveling and just hanging out in their hometowns.
5. Professors will be much more chill.
I was handed an eight-page syllabus in my first class of the summer semester. I cried a little.
6. I won't have that much homework.
If anything the work load is amplified times ten. Professors know that people only take one or two classes so they make an effort to give out as much practice as they can.
7. This was such a good idea.
Maybe one day i will be glad i took accounting during the three months out of the year that i am supposed to be on break -- maybe not.
8. I will do it every summer for the rest of college.
I kept thinking sure I'll just do an online summer class for all my summers but that leads me to my next misconception.
9. Online courses are less work than in person.
Online classes require a certain level of motivation that in the summer seems to be nearly impossible to possess.
10. Class won't interfere with being able to have fun.
Sometimes, this is true. But there are many things I have had to pass up on because of late night studying. It will pay off in the future -- right?
