The 10 Most Messed Up Plot Twists In Movie History

1. "Chinatown"

The story begins with a woman hiring Jake Gittes, a private investigator, to watch her husband. Soon enough, the mystery becomes a murder mystery and we are introduced to two other women. Evelyn is revealed to be the daughter of one of the antagonists in the film, Noah Cross. After Jake sleeps with Evelyn, he watches her leave the house through the window. She appears to be comforting Katherine, who is tied up in a bed. He confronts Evelyn and accuses her of kidnapping Katherine.

The Twist

It's revealed that not only are they actually sisters, but Evelyn is also Katherine's mother.

2. "Planet of the Apes"

Three astronauts awake on a mysterious planet where they soon discover that primates are at the top of the food chain. In this planet, humans who are seen as savages are usually killed or enslaved. The two remaining astronauts, Taylor and Nova, are captured. Taylor is closely observed by scientists because he is believed to be intelligent. After gaining one of the primate's trust, Taylor and Nova are able to escape.

The Twist

They find an area known as the Forbidden Zone, where humans once inhabited. Taylor and Nova find remnants of human artifacts and they come across the Statue of Liberty. The mysterious planet is actually Earth long after a nuclear war that resulted in the downfall of humanity.

3. "Love, Actually"

This film had several love stories that intertwined and impacted each other. One of the love stories featured a couple that tied the knot and everyone comes to the conclusion that the best man isn't a fan of his best friend's wife. She decides to do everything she can to warm up to him but she is constantly given the cold shoulder.

The Twist

It turns out that he doesn't actually hate her. In fact, he's madly in love with her. It's messed up because the audience wasn't given the full context, so it seems like this guy fell madly in love with a complete stranger. To make matters worse, she ends up giving him a kiss at the end of this creepy reveal.

4. "Identity"

This movie never fails to creep me out. It's about a convict who is awaiting trial for murdering people and his psychiatrist, who claims that the man has dissociative identity disorder. There are ten different people in this man's head who all find themselves stranded at a motel. Once they are all picked off one by one, the remaining identities decide to figure out who is the culprit. They end up offing each other until only one seemingly innocent personality is left. The psychiatrist uses the man's journal as proof and he is sent to a mental institution instead of prison.

The Twist

In a horrifying scene, it is discovered that the personality that is responsible for the murders is the mute, nine year old boy, Timmy. Timmy faked his own death after killing his parents off and returns to murder the remaining personality. Now that Timmy has taken over, the man kills the driver of the vehicle transporting him to the mental institution and strangles his psychiatrist.

5. "Primal Fear"

This film blessed me with major trust issues. The concept is similar to Identity because it deals with multiple personalities. An altar boy is on trial for the murder of an Archbishop. The defense attorney finds a VHS tape containing evidence that the Archbishop forced the altar boy to engage in sexual acts with another altar boy and a girl. When the defense attorney asks the altar boy, he transforms into his evil alter ego, Roy. The defense attorney gets the altar boy off with an insanity plea.

The Twist

Roy was the altar boy's real personality all along. He faked his multiple personality disorder and taunts the defense attorney by thanking him for helping him get away with murder. To make things even worse, he faked his stutter in order to manipulate people into believing that he wasn't capable of harming anyone. On the bright side, at least Edward Norton's career took off.

6. "Fallen"

The film begins with the protagonist, Hobbes, narrating about the day he almost died. He visits a serial killer in prison who is due for electrocution. Later, Hobbes and his partner investigate a case of a copycat killer who fashions his victims in the same manner as the previous psychopath. The true killer isn't a person, but a demon that can transfer into people's bodies. Hobbes laces a single cigarette with poison and tricks the demon into chasing him to an isolated cabin in the woods. The demon transfers into him just as he smokes his last cigarette. Without a body to transfer to, the demon's fate is sealed.

The Twist

A cat randomly arrives on the premises and the demon transfers into the cat's body. Hobbes dies and the demon is the one who was narrating the whole time, using Hobbes's voice.

7. "The Mist"

A group of people are trapped inside of a supermarket as monstrous creatures take over the city. The tension in the supermarket gets intense when everyone starts believing what an insane lady is preaching. She deduces that the creatures will keep killing people unless they sacrifice a child. The child's father is obviously not cool with that, so he and three other individuals escape the supermarket and drive away. After dodging several disgusting creatures, they decide they'd rather die peacefully than eaten alive. So, the father shoots everyone in the head, including his son. He runs out of bullets and exits the vehicle. He patiently waits for a creature to arrive and kill him.

The Twist

Moments after he shoots his only friends and family, the mist clears up and the military arrives to save the day.

8. "Saw"

Two men find themselves locked in a room, where a dead body lies in between them. They are secretly given different instructions. Adam must escape the room and Lawrence must kill Adam before six. Unbeknownst to Lawrence, his wife escapes her kidnapper at six and he hears gunshots. Believing that his wife is in danger, he saws his foot off and crawls out of the door. Later on, Adam searches the kidnapper's dead body and realizes that he is not the mastermind, he was simply another victim following the rules of the game.

The Twist

The corpse that was laying in the room for an ungodly amount of time was the true mastermind and serial killer. He literally gets up and removes the prosthetic disfigured skin from his face and acts like it's normal to hold his breath for roughly 7 hours.

9. "Gone Girl"

This twist wasn't as surprising as the rest and was revealed earlier in the film, but it doesn't make it any less insane.

Nick falls in love with America's sweetheart, "Amazing Amy", who was given that nickname because she inspired the main character of her parent's popular children's book. Amy and Nick's relationship fall into rough times and she disappears. The police department find strong evidence that Nick might have killed her and the community turns on him.

The Twist

Instead of talking it out like a normal person would, she fakes her own death. She drains blood out of her body everyday using doctor certified tools and she pours it on the floor. She cleans the blood off, leaving only a few drops of blood in order to replicate a homicide scene. She plans on leaving an anonymous tip to the police and drown herself in a lake. At the last minute, she has a change of heart because of the kind words he fabricates in an interview. She goes to her ex-boyfriend's house and kills him. She arrives at the police station and claims that her ex-boyfriend abducted her. At this point, Nick knows that she's a sociopath, but he stays with her anyways.

10. "Oldboy"

I prefer the American remake but either way, you'll be shocked and disgusted. Joe is abducted and trapped in a locked room for twenty years. He is fed regularly and even has a nice television set in the room. He watches the news and the Anchor reports that his wife was brutally murdered. It is disclosed that he is the prime suspect but the police have yet to apprehend him. Throughout the years, he watches interviews of his daughter, as she slowly grows up. He is drugged once again and awakens in a field. He tries to track down the man who kidnapped him and in the process he meets a beautiful woman. They eventually fall in love and sleep together.

The Twist

The man who captured him hired a crew of people to create fake news stories and hired an actress to portray his grown daughter. In reality, the woman he fell in love with is his daughter. The kidnapper laughs hysterically before he shoots himself. Joe finds his way back to the hotel he was once a prisoner in and pays the kidnapper's henchmen to lock him in the room again. The movie ends with him eating in his room watching television, as if nothing traumatic has happened.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.

What's up Asshat,

I've composed a list of things that I wish upon you, and they're harsh and cruel. These things are things that I wouldn't wish upon my worst of enemies, not even that Starbuck's barista who always screws up my order, not even him. You fall into a whole other category of hate. You surpass Starbucks barista. Congratulations, I'm actually a pretty nice person, making you worthy of every single bit of torture I wish upon you. What are these things I wish upon you you might ask?
