During Sophomore year of high school, my friends and I would sit by our lockers happily playing music. But as soon as anyone stepped a foot through that door, we would scramble to shut off the noise stumbling over each other in our haste to not embarrass ourselves. We always made it a point to listen to the widest arrangement of songs from "High School Musical" to singer-songwriters—and pretty much everything in between. Those were the best times, and honestly, no matter how embarrassing the song may have been, I think that some of the lyrics were pretty great. Here are a few of them:
1. There's a lightning in your eyes, I can't deny / Then there's me inside a sinking boat running out of time." –"Ready to Run," One Direction
I’m not sure what I love about this line, but I still adore it. Not a lot of people would proudly scream their love for One Direction—speaking of, why does anything marketed towards a teenage girl always become invalid?—but when I think of One Direction, I’m hit by a blur of memories: my friends and I screaming their songs in my car, whether it be on endless road trips or just a trip to the gas station, and dancing around with the people I love most. Every song has a memory.
2. "Another tear, another cry / Another place for us to die / It's not complicated. Another love that's gone to waste, / Another light lost from your face, / It's complicated." –"Autumn Leaves," Ed Sheeran
This ginger has some amazing lyrics. I remember waiting eagerly for his debut album to come out, savoring any new music he would release. Back then, people asked what could possibly be so appealing about him. Now he has a Grammy.
3. "Your skin and bones turn into something beautiful." –"Yellow," Coldplay
What is up with the internet hating now? Especially in light of the Super Bowl performance, all I read are hateful comments directed toward Coldplay on the internet. Do people not understand that songs like "Yellow," "Clocks," "Fix You," and "Viva La Vida" aren't classics. Apparently fame is ephemeral—the Internet never likes one thing for too long. But I believe you should shamelessly stick to what you love.
4. "You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray, / And I stood there loving you and wished them all away." –"Cold As You," Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift goes right along with the internet’s trend of hating people. It's not uncommon for you to see a tweet about someone praising her. Then a minute later, the same person will criticize her for something completely unrelated. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I don’t understand why people constantly try to invalidate Taylor’s music.
5. "You’re ripped at every edge but you’re a masterpiece." -"Colors," Halsey
Again, Halsey’s someone the internet either loves or hates. Still, I’ve always loved her music.
6. "Insecure in her skin, / Like a puppet, a girl on a string." –"She's So Gone," Lemonade Mouth
I have a shameless love for Disney Channel Original Movies, and this is a personal favorite of mine, mainly because an Indian character sang this line. There’s no harm in not growing up.
7. "You asked me what my sign is, and I told you it was, ‘Stop.’" –"Take A Hint," Victorious
This line is hilarious. Also, ask pretty much any girl and they’ll probably relate to a situation like this. Nickelodeon’s still relatable.
8. "I'm trying to keep the lights from going out / And the clouds from ripping out my broken heart. / They always say a heart is not a home / Without the one who gets you through the storm." –"Before The Storm," Jonas Brothers
2009 was a wild time. Enjoy the throwback.
9. "The city of angels is lonely at night, / Keep myself alive by candlelight. / Say she can't love you like I do, / Look me in the eyes and say it's true." -"Take Me Along," Miley Cyrus
Speaking of throwbacks, who remembers "old school" Miley Cyrus?
10. "Why is this all so confusing, / Complicated and consuming, / Why does all this make me angry? / I wanna go back to being happy." – "Don't Wanna Be Torn," Hannah Montana
Speaking of Miley Cyrus, I’m sure no one can forget her all too famous alter-ego.
Looking back on it, I wish my friends and I hadn’t been so quick to turn off our music. We spent so many nights screaming our most "embarrassing" songs at the top of our lungs, and we were blissfully happy. I hope you find whatever that is for you, whether it’s having your own concert in a car or singing along to a Disney Channel movie at 2am over Skype. Don’t apologize for something that makes you happy.
