Long Island has so much more to offer than the ocean and the sound. Whether you're planning on hitting up one of the forks or heading out west to Nassau, there's so many fun things you can do that make up great day trips. Forget the water parks and the mall trips, try one of these instead:

1. Fire Island.

Fire Island is a prime place for a day trip. It's not too far away, and it's not that expensive of a trip either. There's unique shows and shops, and the culture there is like no where else.

2. Greenport

Greenport seems to be becoming more and more popular every year. This cute nautical town is great for shopping and for seafood lovers. Greenport also has great night life and is located on the North Fork.

3. Mattituck Lions Club Strawberry Festival.

Something I've been going to ever since I can remember, The Strawberry Festival is definitely my favorite event of the year. There's so many rides and vendors, and don't forget all the strawberry foods (strawberry daiquiris are a favorite of mine). There truly is something for everyone at this festival.

4. Riverhead Polish Fair.

Located in the heart of Polish Town, the annual Riverhead Polish fair attracts thousands every year. There's traditional Polish food, dancing, and crafts. And there's beer, lots of beer.

5. Lavender By the Bay.

7540 NY-25, East Marion, NY 11939.

Not only is this place breathtaking, it's also a great place to spend the day to relax. This lavender farm offers a variety of Long Island made lavender products.

6. Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge.

2595 Noyack Rd, Sag Harbor, NY 11963

Peaceful and scenic, this bird sanctuary and wildlife refuge is the perfect place to spend your day. You can feed birds and other animals right out of your hand (bring your own seed). It's free and is hidden away in Sag Harbor.

7. Brookhaven Amphitheater.

55 South Bicycle, Selden, NY 11784

This theater offers a variety of shows throughout the summer, and some are free. This is also a great place to check out on the 4th of July, it's always jam-packed and filled with people.

8. Jones Beach Theatre.

1000 Ocean Pkwy, Wantagh, NY 11793

A little bit of a hike for you east-enders, but definitely worth the drive. Jones Beach offers so many concerts over the summer. It's literally on the beach so it differs from the Brookhaven Theatre.

9. Westhampton Beach.

Probably the cutest little town on the south shore if you ask me. Downtown West Hampton Beach has a variety of restaurants and boutiques and is less than 10 minutes away from the beaches on Dune Road.

10. Montauk.

Last, but not least -- Montauk. Besides going to visit the Lighthouse this summer, take the time to visit the town and the parks surrounding it, too. Montauk is filled with Native culture and is absolutely gorgeous.

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
