Unfortunately not all of us can go home for Thanksgiving break, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! Going to school or living far away from home changes you and gives you a strength and independence that living close to home may never give you. You bond with the people around you who also cannot go home. Just because you aren't close during the school year doesn't mean you won't bond now. You become a family with those around you because you know that although your family isn't here, your college friends will always have your back. But there will ALWAYS be those small things about home that you miss.
1. Any college student knows that the first person you miss when you get to college is your pet!
Their little faces always make the holidays 10000 times better!
2. Your childhood bed from home will always be the most comfortable bed you've ever slept in.
You know you need it after sleeping on those plastic mattresses for three months.
3. Homemade!
Remember the days when you could walk downstairs and there was an array of food for FREE at your fingertips? Yup we all miss stuffing our faces for free.
4. Your own shower.
After spending three months with shower shoes, you can't wait for the day when you don't have to wear them and let the water run under your feet.
5. Driving!
Those of us who live on campus can't often just get up and go drive when we want. Getting behind that wheel and feeling the freedom is good for the soul. When you're stuck on campus for thanksgiving, you definitely wish you had a car. How are we supposed to go Black Friday shopping?
6. TV
It's break, that means its time to catch up on your favorite shows. For some of us, when we can't go home, we have no way to watch our faves. Now how will we survive? Guess we'll just have to wait until Christmas.
7. Your favorite restaurant from home.
Breaks are the perfect time to go down memory lane and get your favorite guilty pleasure food from your favorite restaurant. Its definitely one of the few moments that make you realize your home.
8. Your childhood best friend.
They probably get you better than anyone else ever will. Spending a Thanksgiving break without them will be hard but you know that there will be plenty of FaceTime dates.
9. Holiday craziness.
When you stay on campus during a break, the campus is often very empty. You crave that chaos that could only come from Thanksgiving day preparations with your family. No matter how hard you try, the craziness of your own family will never be matched.
10. Most obviously, your family.
Although Thanksgiving is known for avoiding touchy topics, bickering, and tension, it's also a time for coming together out of genuine love for each other. It's the one time during the year that everyone puts aside their differences the second the food hits the table. We all want that Thanksgiving magic.
No matter where you are for Thanksgiving, make it the best you can. If you get to go home, enjoy every minute of it. If you have to stay on campus, make the most of it. Order in some food, find some friends and go on an adventure. Whatever the day holds for you, have a happy Thanksgiving!
