We all have those days when we feel so far down in the dumps we don't know what to do with ourselves. You know what I'm talking about, whether you're stressing out about school, going through a break-up or just having one of those days. There never really is a simple solution to fix a bad mood but sometimes it's the little things that cheer us up. Here are 10 small ideas to make yourself feel better on those bad days.
1. Movie Night.
Change into your pj's, order your favorite take-out food and buy a lot of candy (preferably a combination of sweet and salty). Wrap yourself up like a burrito with the coziest blanket you own and put on your favorite Disney movie. Yes, a movie for a child. No matter how old you get, Disney will make you feel like a kid again and for some reason, that is oddly comforting. I guarantee after you stuff your face and watch cartoon characters sing your mood will be boosted.
2. The Ultimate Girl's Day.
Take a bubble bath, a long one. Put a face mask on and paint your nails while listening to old throwback jams. Lounge on your bed and flip through a stupid magazine. Invite your girlfriends over and watch a chick flick. Go shopping. Retail therapy is universal.
3. Drive.
Get in your car and drive with no destination. Blast your favorite music and roll the windows down. Stop somewhere and get lunch. Find a nice spot to people watch while you eat. Every time you see something worthy of a photograph pull over and take a picture. I spent hours doing this yesterday and it completely reversed my mood. Adventures are good for the soul.
4. Friends.
Being by yourself is necessary at times, but too much alone time can make a bad mood worse. Surround yourself with your friends as much as you can, regardless of what you do. Go to the mall, watch Netflix together, get dinner. And of course, everyone's very favorite, go out and take some shots. Having good company and being around people that make you laugh will force you to forget why you were down in the first place.
5. Get Ready.
Maybe you have nothing to do today, do your hair and make up anyway. Put on your favorite outfit and be ready for the day. Even if you're just going to the grocery store or the library, feeling good about yourself will make you feel better. Being dressed and ready to go will force you to get out of the house and be productive. Who wants to sit on the couch when their eyeliner is sharp enough to kill?
6. Go Outside.
The outdoors can be a cure all. It's harder to do when there's snow on the ground and it's twenty degrees, but it's still better than wasting away in your room. Bundle up and go sledding or build a snow fort with your friend. When it's warm and sunny this should be a give in. Go for a walk or even a hike. Go to the beach. Sit in your backyard and read a book. Sunshine and fresh air will do you
7. Distract Yourself.
Easier said than done, I know. Start with something small, like music. If you're feeling sad, please do not listen to old Avril Lavigne songs or The Fray. That is suicide. Listen to that playlist you made for drives to the beach with friends. Watch funny movies with stupid and corny jokes. Watch YouTube videos or Vines of animals and people falling (hilarious). Anything that will distract you and not worsen the mood. As small as these things may be, they will cause you to think in a more positive way.
8. Get Creative.
Paint a picture. Read a book. Make some jewelry, maybe a bracelet for each of your friends. Create something out of scrap materials. Anything that requires two hands and your imagination. Creating something beautiful will make you realize life is not as serious as you make it to be.
9. Organize.
Clean your room top to bottom. Organize your closet, even color code it. Throw away all of those old Aeropostale clothes and animal print handbags from middle school. Clear out anything you don't use anymore. Eliminate all of that clutter. Getting rid of unnecessary items will allow you to feel clean and put together. Not only will organizing keep you busy, but having a clean space will give you a clear mind as well.
10. Exercise.
It can be extremely hard to get yourself to work out on days you can barely get out of bed, but once you do it your day will change for the better. Exercising will give you that outlet to release any built up anger or emotions in a safe and healthy way. You will feel so energized after your work out that you won't want to lay around all day and wallow in self pity. Not to mention your body will thank you for it when summer rolls around.
