We all have that one TV series on Netflix that we can binge watch over and over, but never seem to get sick of it. For me, my favorite T.V. show of all time is How I Met Your Mother (shout out to my boyfriend for pushing me to make this phenomenal decision). This show has both hilarious and heart-warming content that I can never get enough of. I have watched all nine seasons three times now, and I laugh just as hard as the first time.
After watching the series for third time, I began to realize how many relevant life lessons the show contains. Even if you have never watched this show, I know for a fact everyone can relate to at least one of these lessons. I had a very hard time narrowing them down to just 10, but I chose the lessons that I feel are the most important.
1. Nothing good happens after 2 a.m.
As much as we hate to admit it, our parents were right. Most of the decisions we make after 2 a.m. are not the best or brightest. They may seem like smart ideas at the time, but your 10 a.m. self may not feel the same.
2. You cannot plan out your life.
Throughout the entire series, Ted focuses on planning out every aspect of his life and how things should be. He is a hopeless romantic who looks for love in all of the wrong places. Unfortunately, life is unexpected and messy. I know this is something I really struggle with because I am the type of person who has a plan for everything. I need to know whether the outcome is going to be good or bad. Sometimes all we can do is roll with the punches and take life as it comes. The best things happen when you least expect it, so just slow down. Learn from your mistakes and take life one day at a time.
3. Pursue a career you are passionate about.
Although most of our passions may seem like unreasonable career choices, you have to do what you love. If you follow your heart and stand by what you believe in, it may lead to something even greater than you imagined. Ted, Lily and Marshall all set aside their true passions at one point and chose more "reasonable" options. I will not give away too much, but all of them eventually realize they are not happy with their decisions. In the end, everything works out but they had to make some sacrifices in order to get there.
4. The most important people in your life are the ones you picture yourself sitting on the front porch with.
Picture the person you are dating or your group of best friends. Do you see yourself sitting happily on a porch with them when you are old and grey? If you can, then they are right for you. You will have friends but true friendship never dies. The ones who were there in the beginning will stick with you through all of the good, bad and ugly moments in life.
5. Do not run back to the past because it is familiar.
No matter how tempting it may be to hold on to the comforts of the past, sometimes you just have to forget it and move on. If it is not meant to be, do not force what you cannot change. Once you learn to let go, you open yourself up to new opportunities.
6. Accept all challenges.
Your life challenges may not be as disturbing as Barney's are, but he always has a positive attitude towards a challenge he encounters! Do not let the fear of failure stop you from facing a challenge. More than likely you will gain useful skills and a new-found confidence in your personal abilities.7. Fight for the ones you are worth it.
Relationships are hard work. Not everything is going to be "picture-perfect," but do not give up on them. Keep fighting and hold them close.
8. Make every day legendary.
Barney Stinson is the definition of a man who lives his life to the fullest. Although all of his "legendary" choices are questionable and outrageous, it makes the show incredibly entertaining. Sometimes the most stupid decisions end up making the best memories.9. Marry your best friend.
Love comes in all different forms, but the best kind is when you fall in love with your best friend. Find someone who you can laugh endlessly with, who will hold you when you cry, who you can trust with you life and someone who accepts all of your flaws. Because when you marry your best friend, it makes life just a little bit easier.
10. Love sucks, but it is the best thing we do.
Even though Ted may be a total dweeb at times, he certainly knows how to love. Being in love isn't always going to be the fairytale you imagined. It will give you moments of uncertainty, sadness, pain, confusion, selfishness and vulnerability, but it is the best thing for us. Love pushes us to our limits, opens our mind to new experiences and motivates us to become the best version of ourselves. The right one is out there, but you just have to be patient.
My biggest piece of advice: Watch the show.
I promise you will not regret it!
