10 Life Lessons From Ron Swanson

We all have certain philosophies by which we live our lives, whether they be biblically based or just some unspoken creed we ourselves devise. What is life without these codes of honor, unspoken or loudly declared? Perhaps some of the wisest phrases that have been uttered have been spoken by none other than Ron Swanson. This mustachioed, belligerent government employee spent seven glorious seasons on television spewing truth from his steel trap of a mind, and I'm here to share with you just a few. Don't tell him this though, because he'd likely charge you for all of this free advice.

1. The Perfect Government:

Everyone always says that no form of government is perfect. Ron Swanson disagrees. He has a pretty foolproof plan all worked out.

2. Taxpayers' Woes:

Everyone has thought this at least once, no matter how big a supporter of government they seem to be. It takes a man like Ron Swanson to have the guts to declare it.

3. Social Interaction:

Basically every introvert ever. But then again, when the situation calls for it, conversation sometimes cannot be avoided.

4. Coworker Relationships:

Working is no fun. Working with other people, people you may not always get along with, can be even less fun. Ron's philosophy ensures that your coworkers know where you stand.

5. On Superstition:

We all know that luck doesn't truly exist. Ron just said what we all were thinking. Real winners work hard; luck has nothing to do with it.

6. On the Marvels of Breakfast Food:

Although this was already an undisputed truth, Ron succinctly epitomizes it in this moment. Come sunshine or rainy day, breakfast food can take the pain away.

7. Teaching Lessons:

I mean really all Ron is saying here is to take care of you and your house first and foremost. And he's right, fishing is not that hard.

8. Capitalism:

If you think about it enough, capitalism has greatly affected the way the world runs. America herself has much to owe to this system. If it works, it works!

9. Cats and Dogs:

I personally love cats and small dogs...but he's got a point. Practically speaking, they're not good for very much.

10. Hallmark and their Scams:

This. This is prime Ron Swanson. It may not be entirely untrue either...

Ron has been known for speaking very little, and when he does speak he speaks his mind with no qualms. Whether or not you personally agree with the philosophies of Ron Swanson, there is no arguing that his mustache carries with it a certain air of authority. So regardless of what his words may be, they always carry a high level of importance.

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
