It's that time of year again when we can't decide if we're more excited to go back to school because we get to see our friends, or to go back-to-school shopping! Either way, the hype doesn't last long once school work, jobs, and social events come flying at you all at once. So, I have compiled a list to make your life easier!
1. If the university is offering help, take it!
"How can I be expected to handle school on a day like this?" Is there always something going on? There is, pretty much, always something happening or being assigned during the first week of school. For that reason you will see people walking around with free agendas. Trust me, you want one! You need something to keep your days from running from one day to the next. You will quickly find the back-to-school hype won't last long once the first week of class is over.
2. Prepare for the weather!
Does it ever stop raining in Toledo? If you use this year as your guide you will want to buy an umbrella and rain boots ahead of time; you will need it. Actually, you might want to buy more than one umbrella because they often flip and break when your walking to class. You might as well buy a hooded long fluffy coat while you're at it! It will most likely be raining, snowing and windy most of the year. But don't worry, you will get through it!
3. How can you be sure about your professor?
What do other students think? Definitely, check out ratemyprofessor.com. A lot of students provide feedback on professors from many majors and universities. You will definitely have a better idea of what professors you should or shouldn't sign up for.
4. Hmm, what to eat?
Finding the food choices you prefer may be an issue if you're a picky eater. But, don't worry Starbucks in the student union accepts meal swipes. If nothing else, we have our coffee and that's all we care about anyways, right? But really, there are some good options like Subway, and Croutonz if you want healthier selections. If you live in the dorm, remember that you can always get fruit, yogurt, Gatorade and other items if you're not into the buffet. You will find definitely find something to eat!
5. The parking struggle.
It may seem obvious, but for those who live on campus, you should walk everywhere. Trying to find parking after 9 a.m. is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Also, a good amount of UT students have a slight case of road rage syndrome trying to outrun you in the parking lot to get a spot. Best advice -- leave early if you plan to drive so that you can get a spot in time for class.
6. Make sure you find out early on the difference between rocket dollars and dining dollars.
If you accidentally spend your rocket dollars in place of your dining dollars you will be upset! Check the university website for a list of vendors so you know in advance where you should spend your money! You will be happy you did!
7. You will need to know which bus you're getting on -- blue or gold.
Yes, they go to different places and if you hop on the wrong bus you will end up in the wrong loop and riding for a long time! There are bus loop schedules all over campus so be sure to pick one up!
8. Lunch time advice!
If you are meeting a friend for lunch, try to save a table. Trying to find a table at lunch time is like trying to find a parking spot. If you cannot find a table in the main area, try outside or upstairs!
9. Get to know your professors!
We've all had those courses where you either can't understand the person speaking or the material being taught. You can't be afraid to ask for help or wait too long to find out that you needed it. If you make an effort with your professor they might provide help in office hours or recommend a tutor. Professors appreciate your hard work and many times provide opportunities to add extra points at the end of the course, sometimes increasing you're percentage by a whole letter grade.
10. When scheduling classes you should always pay attention to their locations.
Trying to get all your classes on the same days to start the weekend early is great. We all do it. You should definitely have the campus map handy so that you can check the distance between classes. For example, most freshmen make the mistake of scheduling their 11 a.m. at Rocket Hall after their 10:45 a.m. in University Hall. If you do that you will regret it -- unless you like walking 100 mph.
Getting ready for back to school does not have to be full of anxiety. School life balance is key! Pre-plan and do things to make your live easier before school starts so your not so stressed that first week of class. Also, don't forget to take take a break from school and work to focus on other things. It's college, work hard when you need to, but make sure you have some fun!
