Even though it’s now more than 20 years old, we can all still enjoy and learn a lot from Seinfeld. If you’ve been watching it all week since it dropped on Hulu like me, you’ve no doubt experienced this. Check out these 10 lessons the show about nothing can teach us all.
1.) Nothing can really be something.
Most of Seinfeld is spent with the gang just sitting around and hanging out. While they talk and talk, they really don’t say much, and have a great time doing so. It shows how great just chilling with friends and everyday life can be — things not to be taken for granted.
2.) Don’t take things too seriously.
No matter how wild things get, at the end of the day, the Seinfeld cast writes off most things with a shrug — as it should be. The show teaches you not to sweat things too much, because they’re usually not as big a deal as they seem to be.
3.) Sometimes the little things really do matter.
At the same time, Seinfeld shows us that sometimes the little things are worth fighting for. From a parking spot to a party invite, the gang goes all out when it matters to them.
4.) The importance of friends
No matter what happens in life, having true friends that you can kick back with is always important. More than anything, the Seinfeld gang shows us the importance of friendship.
5.) Hipsters aren’t anything new.
You know those people around Austin that always seem to have ridiculous things going on? That never work but somehow have money? That know everyone? That inexplicably always pull things off? We call them hipsters today, but in the 90’s, there was Kramer, living the hipster life without the label.
6.) No one’s family is perfect, but family is here to stay.
No one’s more embarrassed by their families than Jerry and George, but they stick with them through and through. The Costanza’s and the Seinfeld’s show us that no matter what, the good and bad of your family is here to stay.
7.) The power of BS.
If there’s one thing George Costanza teaches us, it’s just how far BS can go. From conversations, to board meetings, to entire jobs, George always finds a way to get by without doing the work.
8.) Relationships are tough.
No one’s got more relationship trouble than the Seinfled gang, but they just keep at it, looking for who’s perfect for them.
9.) Opportunity can come out of nowhere when you’re in the right place.
From a TV pilot, to acting gigs, to major corporate positions, the Seinfeld gang scores some sweet successes, usually in large part from being in the right place at the right time. It show what a difference living in a place like New York City can make when you’re trying to reach your goals.
10.) What you did in college won’t even really matter someday.
While George and Elaine are often on the job hunt, their college accomplishments don’t seem to matter much. They’ve both got their BA’s, but that’s all that really seems to come up. They’re at stages in their lives where it’s more about experience. It shows just how little college will matter someday and how on-the-job-training and performance will most of the time trump all.
