10 Lessons Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe Taught Us About Friendship

Friends has been an iconic TV show since its start in the early 90’s. When you think of Friends, you think of Joey’s "How you doin?," Chandler’s bad jokes, Ross and dinosaurs, Monica’s obsessive cleaning, Phoebe’s all-around weirdness and songs, and Rachel’s hair.

But what I remember most is all the things Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe’s friendship taught me about all the important relationships in my life.

1. No matter how much time goes by, a best friend is always your best friend. In the pilot episode Monica and the rest of the friends are in their normal hang out place the coffee shop Central Perk. Monica’s high school best friend Rachel shows up just leaving her wedding. Monica reluctantly lets her stay with her, but it doesn’t take long for the two to be just like they used to be in high school.

2. Boys are never more important than friendship. In one episode, Rachel goes out with Jean Claude Van Damn, who Monica has a crush on; in another Monica goes out with Rachel’s high school sweet heart Chip. Both cause tension between the girls at first, but in the end, both end things with the guys and realize their friendship is way more important than a dumb guy.

3. You accept their weird quirks and habits. Phoebe has her share of weird things about her from her songs about smelly cats to believing a cat is hosting her dead mother’s spirit to her friends from the street and her all around Phoebeness. Monica is obsessed with cleaning everything and also has her extreme competiveness. All three put up with and even love the little things that make their friends special.

4. Sometimes the best roommates are not the guys you love but your best friends. Between Monica and Rachel living together and Rachel and Phoebe, there was nothing quite like living with your best friend. When Rachel moves out of Monica's, they realize that there are just some things only your friends can do…and now Monica has to live with a boy.

5. If there is something you are not ready to tell them, they will be there when you are. When Monica and Chandler are secretly dating, Rachel finds out about it. She tries to get her friend to tell her, but Monica never does. Rachel decides to confront them, but then realizes that she is happy for her friend and she will come to her when she is ready.

6. Sometimes you need to sit around in wedding dresses and drink beer. Because, well, we are girls, and sometimes you really just need to sit around in wedding dresses and drink beer.

7. You will do anything for your friends even if it is illegal. When Rachel hurts her ankle and has no insurance, Monica allows her to pretend to be her to use hers. Even though they eventually go back and change it, they showed that when your friends need you, you are always there.

8. Friendship means letting your best friend have the name you picked out for your baby years ago. Most girls know exactly what they want to name their future children, and those names are very important to them. Monica allows Rachel to use "Emma" for her and Ross’s child because she knows Rachel means more to her than any baby name ever could.

9. They are there to help you let loose and not be afraid of judgment. If there was anyone who didn’t care what people thought about them, it was Phoebe. Phoebe helps Rachel let loose and not be worried about what people think when they go run together. Rachel sees that she can be crazy and silly in public, and it's okay.

10. When your life is turned upside down they will always be right there to hold your hand. There were plenty of times the three went through crazy life changes, but none were quite as big as when Rachel finds out she is pregnant. Monica and Phoebe are not only right there when she is finding out but also there whenever she needed them.

The most important thing Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe teach us is that no matter where life takes you, your best friends will always be right there beside you or a phone call away.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
