In college, some professors are nice, understanding and patient, but on the other end, some professors can come off sharp, strict and demanding. I have learned more than just what I am supposed to learn from my tough professors, I have learned valuable life lessons along the way.
One thing I have learned from being in a tough class is self-control. When you're in a class where the professor has rules, stick to their rules. In the long run, it will save your classmates from having to endure another lecture and will save yourself from being embarrassed.
"Patience is a virtue" is something people say all the time, and my response previously has been, "I don't have any." What I have learned is to be understanding and level headed throughout the whole class. Eventually, the professor will get to the part of the lesson you are waiting for.
Another thing I have learned with patience is picking your battles. Don't fight back with the professor over their word choice, or minor things. Some things are so small it is not worth it. Brush it off and move on.
Another thing I have learned though is being your own advocate. If the teacher grades your exam wrong, speak up! Don't have others do it for you, do it yourself. Go to their office hours and if they refuse to fix their mistake, don't be afraid to go to the department chairman. It's not complaining, it's taking your education seriously.
I've been in a lot of tough classes but one thing I have learned is that they usually have big workloads. Get a planner, and when you get your syllabus write in due dates! Not only will it help you, but it will show the professor you care.
Effective communication skills are worth more than anything else. Not only will you use them to help understand what your professor is saying, but you will use them with future employers and in your relationships.
Doing your best work is a must to pass a class that has a strict professor. Sometimes we throw together assignments in the hallway before class, but sometimes the standard is higher. Have your friends proofread it, go to your school's writing center. Do the best you can do.
Also, realize that this class is a learning experience-- not just about the grade. So many times we go to classes wanting a grade, but remember that you're here to learn and sometimes the grade doesn't reflect all the lessons you have learned.
Through classes with professors that have high expectations, I have learned that respect is earned and not given. If you don't participate and do your homework, they will not respect you. Show up on time, and put your best foot forward.
Always remember that pressure creates diamonds. You will come out stronger with more real life skills than you expected. Keep your head up and keep going.
