As my first year at college comes to an end, I am overwhelmed with emotions. The year was filled with many ups and a good share of downs. I am happy to say that I made it and learned a lot on the way.
1. It is OK to be scared.
But it is not OK to let being scared keep you from getting out of your comfort zone once in awhile. I learned I would rather be filled with memories, even if they aren't the best than to be filled with "what ifs."
2. Take things day by day.
Someone gave me this advice not too long ago and man does it help. I have always been a planner. I like to know what's going to happen before it happens. I like to plan my future and figure out how I think things and people will fall into them. I found that things nearly work out as I imagine, so you have to learn to roll with the punches.
3. Don't get caught up on things that won't matter in a year.
Yes, you are growing up and things are important and you probably shouldn't have gone out before that test but it will more than likely be OK. You live and learn. Next time, you will study more and get a good night sleep (or you tell yourself that).
4. Ice cream is good for your soul.
You never need an excuse for an ice cream pick-me-up. And a good jam sesh in the car on the way to get ice cream does wonders.
5. You get out what you put in.
This is true in many instances. It is true with my sorority. The more events I go to, the more sisters I meet and get to know better. The more studying I do, the better grades I get. The more naps I take, the better I can function. You are probably thinking how do I have time to put effort into everything I do? I don't but that doesn't mean I don't give it my best shot.
6. You can use the fact that you are a freshman to do stupid things.
You wear your school id around your neck with nothing less than the lanyard you bought from the campus store during orientation. You think dressing up on the first day is still a thing. You have a few too many nights filled with some poor choices. But it is OK because you're a freshman.
7. The best nights are unplanned.
Whether it be a movie night with your roommates or a night you showed up to a party in a T-shirt and Nike shorts, it probably was one of the best and you consider never dressing up for a frat party again.
8. Sleep is important.
But you can also sleep when you're old so take this one with a grain of salt.
9. Time literally flies.
It feels like yesterday I was moving into my dorm room and meeting my roommate for the first time. Now, I sit here writing this article in my room filled with memories I have to pack up tomorrow.
10. Make it count.
I have grown so much in this past year and made unforgettable memories that I wouldn't have made if I didn't leave my dorm room and make them. Get out of that comfort zone, talk to strangers and experience the next four years with an open heart.
