8 Lessons I’ve Learned The Hard Way.

In This Article:

Trust me when I tell you that you want to learn the easy way.

1. It is not okay to cram study the night before a huge important test.

It's not going to work out the way you wanted, you're going to forget everything and you will be hugely disappointed with your grade.

2. Those people that talk crap about you behind your back, yeah they’re NOT your friends.

You might be at the very least civil to one another, but don't take that as friendship. If they once talked bad behind your back, chances are they are still doing it.

3. Your health IS important.

Don't take your health for granted. It's something that can be ripped away so easily by just one mistake or one misstep. It's incredibly important to put yourself and your health first.

4. Don’t judge someone based on what you hear from others.

This is essentially the same thing as don't judge a book by its cover. But let's be real, there is a reason that gets used all the time. People have different parts of their lives that they keep shoved away, you can never truly know what is going on in someone's life.

5. Relationships can get messy.

And when I say messy, believe me. Messy. This also includes other people's relationships. Stay out of them. Please. Things can go so wrong so fast. Take it from me.

6. Treat people how you want to.

Bear in mind the 'Golden Rule'. Treat others how you would want to be treated. Referring back to #4. You don't know what is going on in their life. Please, treat other people well.

7. Things change, and it’s scary. But you need to roll with it.

Things can change in your life, school, work, or anywhere. It's incredibly important to adapt to your situation and to be able to 'roll with the punched'. There are many things in life that are not in your control.

8. Balance. Balance is key in life.

If I've learned anything so far in this life it's that things in moderation are the best. Not too much chocolate (even though this is extremely hard). Maybe half a chocolate bar and a bowl of strawberries. The same thing applies in other aspects of life. Partying vs Studying. Going out vs. Staying in. Balance is THE key to life, take it from me.

Through many experiences, I've learned these things. Some will agree because they've had experiences similar. I urge you to take these to heart. Please, take it from me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
