John Mayer is an extremely controversial artist. He puts out great, original songs but also has playboy tendencies. Many people I have talked to find it hard to look past his "jerk" moves. But then you have people like me who couldn't care less about his personal life and just soak up the music. 2006 was when I fell in love. I went to see him on his "Continuum" tour when it was in my hometown. The second he played "Gravity" I was head over heels. Since then, I have seen him three times in different cities and have spent more money on tickets than I would like to admit. But John Mayer has a lot of great life lessons in his music. A lot of things people can't talk about he puts out for the world. I can recall many occasions where a John Mayer song caused me to think about life, my choices and how those have brought me to where I am today.
1. "Gravity"
In the song, he writes "Keep me where the light is," signifying that you need to be humble in life always. Remember your roots and where you came from and make sure you love yourself first and foremost.
2. "I'm Gonna Find Another You"
This is a song for anyone who has gone through a breakup recently. Or in the past. It's an uplifting song showing that if you focus on what is best for you, you can let the idiot continue to look like an idiot. Because the day you allow yourself to get over the relationship you can realize there is so much else out there in this big world.
3. "Stop This Train"
For if you are ever feeling life is moving entirely too fast and if you could do anything to go back, you would. You're getting older. So are you siblings and your parents. It's a song that allows you to reminisce on all of the people and places that have allowed you to stand where you are today.
4. "My Stupid Mouth"
We always have moments where we are sitting there thinking to ourselves, "Why in the heck did we just say that?" This song shows you that it is OK to realize your faults, let other people win, and forgive people. John says in the song he will never speak up again but then goes on to say that he only wanted to fit in. I agree that many people say dumb things because they think it's what other people want to hear. The best lesson people can get out of this song is to always say what you think after you think about saying it.
5. "Wildfire"
If you find yourself having an incredibly awful day put this on in your car, room speakers or your headphones. The upbeat tempo and carefree lyrics make it a complete jam-session song. As the summer is right around the corner, roll your windows down, "a little bit of summer is what the whole year is all about."
6. "3x5"
This is one of my absolute favorites. It's about enjoying life as is. Not through a camera or all of social media. Just taking everything around you all in. This is the only way one can appreciate the beauty in everything. It takes a lot of courage and resilience to be able to do things like that in today's world.
7. "Who You Love"
A song about unexpected things. In this particular song, it's about an unexpected relationship coming into your life and you couldn't be happier. It's a love that is so important to you, you would almost do anything to keep them or even get them to love you back. It's something a lot of us struggle with today. A lot of us have a hard time loving even ourselves. When you find someone you enjoy being around you will put walls up because you may have been hurt in the past. But you just have to trust it because you want it so badly. You love who you love.
8. "Age of Worry"
This is a song about accepting your past. All of the mistakes you made and bridges you might have burned. It's about accepting who you are in the present and not worrying about little things anymore. Grow up, learn from your mistakes and be the best version of yourself. One line of the song I love is, "Don't be scared to walk alone, don't be scared to like it." It's about being who you want to be, and if no one likes it, then forget it, you are happy because you are being true to yourself and the person you are.
9. "No Such Thing"
As a young adult, this song really gets me. In the song Mayer talks about there is no such thing as the "real world." After high school things get hard and you're on your own. New opportunities are going to be thrown your way and you don't know what is going to happen next. You can never plan exactly what you're going to do; sure, you can try. But you also don't have to do what everyone else is doing. My favorite line in this song is, "I'd like to think the best of me is still hiding up my sleeve." Because it's talking about how people shouldn't conform to high school stereotypes, they should believe you are going to be more than you were in high school, because thank goodness high school does end. In the real world that version of yourself won't be important. Do what you want to do, it's your life to live.
10. "Perfectly Lonely."
This song is an anthem right now. As many of my friends are in serious relationships I sometimes find myself dwelling on it. This song is about being able to enjoy the time you have before you find your significant other. About being on your own time, no one to answer to, allowed to do whatever you want with no restrictions. It's a time that you won't be able to have again once you have a commitment to someone else. It's about living for yourself. Then the song goes into starting again into new relationships, recognizing his past mistakes and realizing that he won't make those mistakes again because he's learned his lesson.
Of course, there are so many other John Mayer songs that have affected moments of my life. I recommend everyone just put on a John Mayer shuffle and continue on with your day. His words mean a lot to him and they can relate to so many people in so many different situations.
