10 Insider Facts About All-Girl High Schools

Attending school with only girl classmates certainly had its pros and cons... let's be real, you're probably thinking of a few right now! Here are 10 lessons I learned from my experience at an all-girl high school.

1. Because there were no boys, no one wore makeup to school or even brushed their hair for that matter. If someone came to school looking presentable, everyone would ask 100 questions about what that person did the night before or where they might be going after school.

2. Most girls only shaved their legs for special occasions, like homecoming or prom. That means from October to May, some girls' legs could look just like Chewbacca’s. In fact, one of our Mock Election categories was “Hairiest Legs."

3. Yes, we did have men’s bathrooms in the school. Oddly enough this is a question I often get asked. Many people think because all the students were girls, so were all the faculty and staff member, but that is not the case.

4. Our pep rallies were intense. I’ve seen everything from girls getting hit in the face with dodgeballs, to girls falling of the stage during dance offs. Blood, sweat, and tears were needed in order to show our school spirit.

5. No, we didn’t take each other to dances. In fact, all of our dances were what most of you refer to Sadie Hawkin’s dances. We got to do cute “promposals” to guys from other schools.

6. We ate a lot. If you wanted a snack during class, there was a one in three chance the girl next to you had a bag of Cheetos in her pencil case. Not to mention, at least once a month we would beg our teachers into letting us have potlucks, for which everyone brought a dish to share.

7. Most of the time we acted like little boys. We cursed, we burped, and sometimes we even farted. There was no shame in our game. We thought we were hilarious.

8. You know how girl’s menstrual cycles can sync up with their close friend or family member? Well, the same thing happens to us with our classmates. So once a month we would all be extra sassy, emotional, and bloated together.

9. We did have several ways to meet boys. One was brother schools. These were all-boy high schools that got paired with us to put on activities together. For example, my school’s cheer leading team would perform at our brother school’s football games.

10. The sisterhood is real. Sure, many of us girls could be catty at times, but at the end of the day we all had each other’s backs. We formed a bond that went deeper than friendships, and for that I will be forever grateful.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
