Well, it's that time of summer again. The time where you really need to start actually 1. Summer concert series.Port Warwick, City Center, and -typically- The Mariners Museum hold free concerts on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights. These concerts are open to the public for no cost, however, if you don't bring food or drinks, there are some available to purchase. Bring a lawn chair, a cooler, and your friends for a night full of live music and free fun. 2. Pelican's Sno-Balls.With locations in Newport News and Yorktown, Pelican's is a cold, icy, sweet-treat that is sure to cool down anyone in the heat of summer. The "sno-balls" that Pelican's offers are extremely inexpensive and tasty. Pelican's also has cornhole, ladders, and other fun outdoor games that are family friendly and entertaining. 3. Peninsula Pilots baseball games. The Pilots play at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia. If you plan on attending a game, you can easily spend less than $20 the entire time you are at this game. After the $5 adult admission fee, you can head directly to the concession stand and get a hot dog and fries for another $5. If you are like me, you are probably going to be hungry again around the 5th or 6th inning. Well, you still have $10 left, so you can head back to the concession stand to get funnel fries and a water bottle for around $8. Basically, you can have a fun-filled night out at the ball game for under $20. 4. Any beach.Anywhere in Hampton Roads, you are easily within 5 miles of any body of water. So, if driving to Outer Banks is getting a little expensive for you, just pop into any beach on either side of the water for the exact same experience. 5. Busch Gardens and/or Water Country. For pass holders, it is a relatively cheap day. For instance, if you stop at the Taco Bell right down the road from Busch Gardens, drink water for the day, and get a pretzel mid-day, you could go to Busch for about $20. 6. Museums. There are more than 22 museums from Newport News to Virginia Beach ranging from the history of the Virginia Wars to the Children's Museum. There are plenty of deals and Groupons for these museums, so if you watch carefully, you can get major discounts on single day admission passes. 7. Play tourist in Colonial Williamsburg. If you just go to colonial Williamsburg and walk around, it is free. I mean, if you are a local like myself, you don't really need to take the tour for the hundredth time because you've been taking field trips there since elementary school. 8. Visit Mt. Trashmore.Mount Trashmore offers many free amenities including a playground, skate park, a giant hill to fly kites on, and 165 acres to eat a picnic on. The most expensive part of the trip is getting there. 9. Aromas Coffee Shop in City Center. This coffee shop is perfect for a get-together of any sort because it is small and cozy. The drinks are economically priced and perfectly proportioned. After you leave the Friday night concert series at City Center, make sure you stop in at Aromas and get a cool blended coffee. 10. Watch the sunrise or sunset.Going back to what I said about being close to many bodies of water, take an early or late trip out to the beach and watch the sunset or the sunrise over the water. Not only is it breathtaking, it is also very free. So instead of saying "sorry, I can't go out today, I'm broke" you can now offer any of these ten things as an alternative. Your future self, and wallet, will thank you tremendously. |
