The United States sent 262 men and a record-setting 292 women to compete at the Rio Olympics in Brazil. With some of the most talented, diverse group of women the United States has ever sent to an Olympics before, it’s no surprise that the USA is winning in the medal count and breaking records.
1. USA Women’s Gymnastics.
The five women have proved their fierceness by winning the team gold medal, which is amazing because most of them are still teenagers. With Simone Biles winning gold for all-around and Aly Raisman earning silver, the team showed how unbelievable talented they are. They are sure to win more gold medals as the individual competitions are about to begin because of how jaw-dropping their routines are.2. Katie Ledecky.
The amazing swimmer and youngest swimmer on the United States Team, who has won four gold medals and one silver so far, is breaking records, even beating some of her own and remaining undefeated.3. Simone Manuel.
Another talented swimmer, but she is breaking down barriers and showing that anything is possible. Manuel is the first African-American woman to medal in swimming, demonstrating how the United States swimming community needs to change because of how little diversity there is. She took the first step by showing how anybody can do anything, no matter the color of your skin.4. Virginia Thrasher.
She was the first gold medalist for the United States in Rio. At only 19, she won women’s 10m air rifle, showing that shooting isn’t just for men.5. Michelle Carter.
Carter is the first ever American to win gold in women’s shot put. She made history and is making America proud!6. Kristin Armstrong.
Armstrong won her third gold medal at 42-years-old. She shows that age is just a number and that anything is possible if you work hard.7. USA Women’s Rowing.
The USA Women’s Rowing has won their third gold medal in a row, which is amazing, but they are being called the forgotten team. Hopefully this win strengthens their reputation and shows that they are unstoppable.8. Ibtihaj Muhammad.
She is the first United States Olympian to wear hijab, and if that wasn’t remarkable enough with the hatred and Islam-phobia in our country, she won bronze in fencing. She’s a role model for girls and women across the world to show that a person does not have to choose between their religion and athletics.9. Lilly King.
The gold medalist showed her bravery by calling out Russian athletes for enhancement drugs and showed her own talents by beating the Russian swimmer, therefore earning a gold medal of her own without taking anything.10. U.S. Women’s Basketball Team.
The undefeated women’s basketball team is crushing the competitors. The stacked team of WNBA players have proven again and again that they are the one’s to beat. USA women’s basketball defeated Senegal 121- 56 breaking the record of highest points scored and largest win margin (65). If they keep playing the way that they do, they will win another gold medal.
