10 Important Pieces Of Advice For My Little Sisters
Emily Van Bortel

In the blink of an eye, you'll be all grown up. I was not sure how I felt about having siblings. But I would not have it any other way. You've all changed my world for sure. Taught me how to love someone who simultaneously drives me crazy at times. How to laugh at the little things in life, and how to love and care for someone more than myself. No matter how far I am I will always be there for you, always just a phone call away. This one is for you my dear. My ten most important pieces of advice I could give you as you learn, grow, change and become the best version of yourself.

1. When mom and dad say no, do not argue.

They said no for a reason. Trust me they are just looking out for you, and more often than not they know best. Them saying no is not to make you angry or look lame in front of your friends. They are protecting you and you need to let them. A day will come when you will get to make your own decisions, so for now enjoy someone else making them for you. When you look back in ten years you'll probably be happy they said no.

2. When you feel like you're drowning in life.

I wish I could protect you from this feeling. But all I can say is it will always get better. Its okay to not be okay, but do not let that last long. They say that there is light at the end of the tunnel and they are so right. It may not be what you want to hear right now, but you have to believe it. Just keep moving forward, take things one day at a time. It will get better. You are just a little bogged down right now, but remember how strong you are, and you will overcome this.

3. When the boy your crushing on doesn't like you back...

It's okay to be down, but you have to get back up. It was his lose and he is the one missing out. Like they say there are plenty of fish in the sea. Someone else will come around that will see what your worth and will not let you go. Eventually, you'll forget about the boy who didn't feel the same.

4. Be yourself, Your true friends will accept the real you...

NEVER change yourself to impress someone else or try to fit in. If there your real friends they will love your crazy, and outgoing personality. They will never judge you for the crazy, irrational things you do. They will be right by your side creating memories with you.

5. Never let yourself be an option...

You are not an option, you are a choice. Please don't let anyone make you feel like an option, and if they do please walk away. If someone tries to be with you, or be your friend when it is convenient for them it's not meant to be.

6. Do not do something just because you think it will make you cool...

DO NOT fall into peer pressure. If you do not want to do something, don't. It's always okay to say no.

7. Give second chances but never more than a person deserves...

Please know that people make mistakes. Everyone does, you have, I have and every other living human on this planet. I am a firm believer in second chances, and I hope you can be too. This doesn't mean everyone deserves them, it depends on the situation. But you need to use your best judgment to determine who gets the second chances and who does not.

8.Enjoy the little things in life...

The little things in life are sometimes the most important things. Enough said.

9. When someone talks bad about you...

Smile and walk away, your actions will speak louder than your words. Their words may hurt, and you may want to seek revenge. You probably will actually, but don't waste your time. Time is precious, so don't waste it on people who do not matter. The people who you walk away from are behind you for a reason. Just close the door and move on.

10. Respect yourself...

This is the most important piece of advice I could give you. There will come a time when you will lose respect for yourself. Please do not let that last for more than a second. Self-respect and realizing your self-worth are SO IMPORTANT. If you do not have these for yourself, no one else will have them for you. Respect yourself because you are worth it, you are loved, and you will always be enough.

Never let anyone take away the qualities that make you, you. I love you so much and am so lucky to have you as my little sister. Wherever you go or find yourself, Remember I will always have your back, And you will always be my little sister.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
