Warning-Spoilers!
If you don't already know this show I would highly suggest that you do because it is just...WOW. Okay well if you can get over the cussing, drinking, sex, and all the other crazy things that go on you will really enjoy the show! I mean first off look at this cast:
I mean just look at this poster. That alone should just tell you to watch it, but there are some really important lessons that we should pay attention to. Sometimes we miss it in other shows because we are laughing at something else, but this show really makes you take a second and say "oh man...this is serious huh?" I mean it did that for me so here are some important lessons you will learn from this show.
1. Family always comes first.
Whether you really like them or not-when your family needs you, you drop everything and be with them no matter what happens.
2. Family does not have to be blood related.
Yes sweetie - just like you! They always say that family is not someone who is blood related, its thats person who literally will be there for you through any and all problems whether it's divorce, child birth, water being shut off - you know what I mean.
3. Sometimes family will disappoint you.
If you have seen the series, their father and mother are constant disappointments in and out of each season, which at some point will break you. You want things to be different that time because they have shown change, but in the end they are still the same person with a new mask on.
4. You will even disappoint yourself.
*Deep breathe* it will be okay. Whatever happened has already happened and you just need to move on. However, when you feel like you are suppose to be doing it all and you feel like your failing. That is hard to pull off, but you breathe and move on.
5. You do not need to hide who you are.
*Silently cheering in the background* BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE! We all watched as Mickey's dad tries to kill him (not once but TWICE) because his son is gay and he does not approve! He finally stands up for who he loves and what he wants no matter what big daddy says! YOU SHOULD DO THE SAME! BE loud and be proud!
6. Sometimes you are forced to grow up faster than you hope.
From episode one, we learn that Fionna is in charge of her other siblings since the age of 15! So we see her grow and she is having a hard time adjusting to wanting to live her life and still be there for the kids! Not saying it cannot be done, but sometimes you get so use to one thing that you do not know how to let go when it is time to let it go.
7. You cannot run away from your problems.
The Gallaghers somehow always end up in court or in jail or admitted to an institution for mental illness...or go to the army to leave your life behind! No matter how far you run though, your troubles will always find you and sometimes it can be int he nastiest way.
8. It's okay to let people go from your life.
Sometimes it is hard to accept that the person you are talking to or possible dating does not want to be with you. Or sometimes they leave and cannot call to tell you why so you are left wondering why and leaving a million voice messages. The fact of the matter is: sometimes you have to let other people go even if you think they need to stay in your lives.
9. Sometimes it is hard to accept that something is wrong.
This episode alone made me want to cry so much! Ian did not want to accept it and Mickey almost did not either, but once he saw that he needed to go to an institution, it literally broke his heart. It can be hard to accept that something as huge as being diagnosed as bipolar and what it does to someone, but this show really shows what it can do not only for the people surrounding you, but to someone who is not ready to accept it yet.
10. Your mistakes do not define your future.
In this show, we see two of them go to jail, one get in trouble for screwing his professor, one was dealing drugs, and one just could not figure out their life so they got pregnant. Even with all of this happening, they stuck together and told each other that they can do this for each other!
Shameless is a show that I was worried about even liking just from the first episode, but I could not judge a book by its cover. For that I am grateful because this show keeps everything real and raw about what is going on around the world that we ignore because its either not happening to use or its not that big of a deal. Coming out as gay could make or break someones life and whether they feel safe or not. Being diagnosed with a mental illness makes you feel so different that you lash out to keep their mind off of it. Being forced to grow up because your parents are not really there is happening and it sucks, but it has to happen. All I can say is thank you for being what everyone needs to see: real, raw, and the true emotions about what is happening in the world.
