10 Things I Miss About High School

Don't be in such a rush to graduate.

10 Things I Miss About High School
Aaron Burden

Going into my first spring semester at college, I gained an experience of my new home. Although there are many fun and exciting things about college, there are some things I miss about high school.

1. Food

I know many of us hate the food they serve us in high school, but in my opinion I miss it terribly. I remember seeing my favorite meal on the lunch menu and looking forward to the day it was served. In college you get more options, good ones too. But I'd personally rather have my high school lunch menu which didn't allow me to gain much weight only being limited to certain foods.

2. Dress Code

This is something I never thought I would admit. Yes, I miss my high school's dress code. At least I was limited to only certain clothes so I didn't have to run around like a maniac looking for something to wear in my closet every day.

3. Fashion

Although I miss #2, I do, however, miss caring so much about what I was wearing. In high school I enjoyed dressing up and looking cute. In college, I throw on my sweat pants and sweat shirt and call it a day. Besides, who has time for that?

4. Friends and Family

Of course we all miss our friends and family when we go off to college. We've known some of them our whole lives. Going off to college can be tough when you have to say goodbye to your loved ones.

5. Knowing teachers on a personal level

In high school you get the chance to become close with your teachers in many ways. Have you ever had teachers more than once? Or have older siblings who have had the same teacher? Now they just call me by my last name so they don't mix us up. It actually does suck leaving your favorite high school teachers.

6. Knowing everyone

Along with knowing some of the teachers on a personal level, you tend to know most of the students in your school. I went to a pretty small high school and can probably name most of the people in my grade off the top of my head.

7. Work

Yes, the school work. I know this is an obvious one, but who doesn't miss it? Anyone complaining about the high school work, just wait until college. P.S. you will miss it dearly.

8. Cost

This one speaks for itself. The cost of high school? no worries. The cost of college? Let's just say us college students are screwed.

9. Dances

Homecoming, Valentine's Day Dance, Spring Fling, Prom, you name it, I was there. I miss going to all of the high school events, especially my favorite, Prom.

10. Having a daily routine

During the high school years I would wake up, get ready, go to school, come home, repeat. Nothing really changed. Classes were the same every day. Unlike high school, in college your classes tend to be all over the place to the point where you can't even find time to sit down and eat. I miss having the same easy routine every day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
