10 'Grey's Anatomy' Quotes We Can All Relate To
ABC Television Network

In a little less than a month, Grey's fanatics will be tuning into the long awaited 13th season of one of the top dramas on TV.

Not only is Grey's Anatomy incredibly addicting once you get started, but episodes are filled with some great quotes that everyone can relate to, even if you aren't a surgical resident or an intern at Seattle Grace/Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

1. "At some point, you have to make a decision. Boundaries don’t keep other people out, they fence you in. Life is messy. That’s how we’re made. So you can waste your life drawing lines… or you can live your life crossing them. But there are some lines… that are way too dangerous to cross. Here’s what I know: If you’re willing to take the chance, the view from the other side… is spectacular."

One of the best parts of Grey's is the monologues at the beginning and ending of each episode that is totally relatable to the everyday person.

In this monologue, Meredith, the show's main character, reminds us that life isn't always pretty and stepping outside your comfort zone is not only necessary but incredibly rewarding.

2. "We all think we’re going to be great. And we feel a little bit robbed when our expectations aren’t met. But, sometimes, our expectations sell us short. Sometimes, the expected simply pales in comparison to the unexpected. You gotta wonder why we cling to our expectations. Because the expected is just what keeps us steady… standing… still. The expected is just the beginning. The unexpected… is what changes our lives."

Life isn't perfect, we can't plan out every part of our lives and we can't predict our futures, but it does make us feel better if we believe we can. But sometimes, Meredith reminds us, the unexpected things are the best things that ever happen to us whether it be meeting someone unexpectedly who becomes a huge part of our lives or whether it be a spur of the moment decision that changes our lives forever in a good way.

3. "Change… We don’t like it, we fear it. But we can’t stop it from coming. We either adapt to change, or we get left behind. It hurts to grow. Anybody who tells you it doesn’t is lying. But here’s the truth: Sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. And sometimes, oh, sometimes, change is good. Sometimes, change is… everything."

Change is something we fear no matter our age, whether it be when we're going into a new school year or going to college after graduating high school, change is scary. What we often forget is that change is a good thing, even great sometimes, something Meredith reminds us of in one of her monologues.

4. "Sometimes, the key to making progress is to recognise how to take that very first step. Then you start your journey. You hope for the best and you stick with it, day in and day out. Even if you’re tired, even if you want to walk away. You don’t. Because you are a pioneer. But nobody ever said it’d be easy."

We've all felt like we were stuck in a rut before, felt like we weren't doing anything to make our lives better and we're stuck in the same position, sometimes we need to be reminded that nothing good is ever easy, but in the long run it is all worth it.

5. "We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's possibility under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore until we finally understand for ourselves like Benjamin Franklin meant. That knowing is better than wondering, that waking is better than sleeping. And that even the biggest failure, even the worst most intractable mistake beats the hell out of never trying."

We've all made mistakes before, all wallowed in our own self-pity because of those mistakes. But we have to keep trying, keep going, because trying and failing is better than never trying.

6. "Have some fire. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature."

Meredith's best friend Cristina gives us this tidbit of inspiration because sometimes we need to be reminded of what we are truly capable of.

7. "I think you can’t wait for someone to fly underneath you and save your life, you have to save yourself. I think you have to save yourself."

We've all heard the stories of Prince Charming saving the damsel in distress when we were little. Snow White gets saved by the Prince's kiss after being poisoned by an apple. Sleeping Beauty gets woken up from an eternal sleep by a kiss from the prince. Too often we depend on other people as our source of happiness so sometimes we need to be reminded that we need to be our own Prince Charming and save ourselves from the Evil Queens of the world.

8. "There's an old proverb that says you can't choose your family. You take what the fates hand you. And like them or not, love them or not, understand them or not, you cope. Then there's the school of thought that says the family you're born into is simply a starting point. They feed you, and clothe you, and take care of you until you're ready to go out into the world and find your tribe."

Family is a funny thing, you grow up with a family that you're related to and as you get older you learn that family can be people that you have no blood relation to and sometimes those people who you have no relation to becoming the most important people in your life.

9. "Screw beautiful, if you want to appease me compliment my brain."

This quote is from Cristina once again. Anyone can be beautiful, anyone can see beauty but it takes a special kind of person to see the brilliance and sometimes, being called brilliant feels a heck of a lot feels better than being called beautiful.

10. "Don’t let fear keep you quiet, you have a voice, so use it. Speak up, raise your hands, shout your answers, make yourself heard. Whatever it takes, just find your voice. And when you do, fill the damn silence."

This last quote is probably my favorite Meredith monologue and is from the latest season of Grey's. Because when you're passionate about something, don't let anyone tell you to sit down and shut up, find your voice and fill that silence.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
