Although September means the dreaded end of summer for many, it’s seen as a great beginning for American Horror Story fans. Each fall has brought us a new season of AHS from the October 2011 premiere of Murder House, up until the long-awaited premiere of Cult which begins Tuesday, September 5th. Over time, it’s become clear that what makes this series so lovable is the broad array of (literally) to-die-for characters. Creator Ryan Murphy keeps AHS lovers on their toes as he develops a separate, unique set of characters for each season. The cast of each season contains many of the same actors including Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, and Kathy Bates. The crossover actors do an amazing job bringing life to a different character each season- and although each AHS series follows a separate plotline, there have been some exciting crossing of paths between seasons, including a rumored a tie between Freakshow and Cult. Before we buckle up to follow a new set of characters in season 7 which is supposedly based off of the 2016 presidential election, it’s only appropriate to reminisce on the greatest characters of AHS history thus far. CAUTION: may contain spoilers.
1. Tate Langdon
The first teenage heartthrob of AHS, Tate is a grungy high school kid turned ghost. His love for Violet is evident in his every move. Tate is spooky and cute, and probably crushed on by everyone who watched Murder House.
2. Addie Langdon
A sibling of Tate, Addie is one of the first characters to appear in the season. Addie has an undying passion for the Murder House, which often leads her to trespass her new neighbors' home. She is often curious why she isn't a "pretty girl" like the ones in the magazines- so she decides to dress up as a pretty girl for Halloween (a total tearjerker).
3. Pepper
The ever-gentle Pepper has appeared in both Asylum and Freakshow. Although she suffers from microcephaly, Pepper exceeds fellow characters in emotional intelligence. From her loyalty to fellow inmate Grace in Asylum, to her adorable relationship with Salty depicted in Freakshow, Pepper is one of the most lovable characters of AHS history.
4. Dr. Oliver Thredson
Seemingly helpful to a desperate Lana Winters, Dr. Thredson from Asylum carries out one of the most terrifying plot twists in all of AHS. He is a sadistic man who would do anything to get the motherly love he never received.
5. Myrtle Snow
The eccentric head of the Witches' Council, Myrtle is a problematic witch who is desperate to find the next Supreme. Her red hair and fashion sense appear to be based off of Grace Coddington. When she is burned at the stake, she screams her last word, "Baleciaga!". Iconic.
6. Madison Montgomery
Madison Montgomery is a Hollywood brat turned talented witch. Her love for booze and boys often overrides her attention to the Coven. Her first words after being brought back from the dead are, "I need a cigarette".
7. Dandy Mott
Dandy Mott is a central character to Freakshow. Said to be a product of inbreeding, there is something very off about Dandy. Nothing pleases him in life until he finds a passion for bloodshed.
8. The Countess Elizabeth
This beautiful vampire portrayed by Lady Gaga has many lovers and a penthouse in the Hotel Cortez. She craves connection and loves nothing more than her son, Bartholomew. Her beauty and style lead her to many lovers who are seen throughout AHS: Hotel.
9. Liz Taylor
A product of Elizabeth, Liz Taylor is one of the most lovable characters of AHS. Her past haunts her until it is resolved at the Hotel Cortez. She loves to stir the pot.
10. Cricket Marlowe
The ghost hunter in AHS: Roanoke is a very eccentric Cricket Marlow. At first, his help is unwanted by Shelby and Matt Miller, but with his spunk and wisdom, he does a great deal of help for the couple by the end of the season.
