As a huge music fan and an avid concert-goer, I think it's so crucial to catch bands early. If you want to see a great band in an intimate venue, if you want to get a picture with them, if you want to get a signed record of theirs or if you want them to be responsive to you on social media, you'll have the best opportunity to do so if you jump on the bandwagon early on in the band's career. I often cringe when I think of times that I heard the same band's name mentioned over and over again and I never bothered to listen to their material, only to realize a year later that they're fantastic, they're one of my favorite bands, they're already massive and I've already missed a concert they played in my city or somewhere close.
You may notice that some of the bands listed here have connections to bands I've previously mentioned. That's because I've actually found that a great way of discovering great, new bands is figuring out what bands are supporting your current favorite bands. Sometimes support bands will sound similar to the headliner, sometimes they'll sound nothing like them, but either way I've found that this is the most effective strategy for finding amazing new bands. So, without further ado, here are 10 of my favorite new bands at the moment and make sure you listen to their tunes as well (your ears can thank me later).
1. Inheaven
This south London band is possibly my favorite out of the eight bands here and that's for one main reason: they consistently put out anthemic, uplifting, emotional, driving rock and roll tunes like it's nobody's business. Fresh from a support tour with Sundara Karma and after being tipped by The Strokes' Julian Casablancas as one of his favorite new bands, these guys have just announced a UK headline tour and they just recently brought out a banging, a bit fizzy, new single called "All There Is." Their vocals from lead singer James Taylor, and bassist Chloe Little, are a match made "Inheaven" (chuckles).
2. The Amazons
Hailing from Reading, England, this indie rock band follows in similar footsteps as Inheaven in that they also know a thing or two about anthemic rock. Though, while Inheaven names bands like Suede, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine as influences, The Amazons take influence from bands like Arcade Fire, Bruce Springsteen and Led Zeppelin. Although their influences sound like a mixed bag, they've definitely already found a distinct, euphoric sound with songs like "Ultraviolet", "Stay With Me" and my personal favorite, "Junk Food Forever."
3. Apache Sun
Glaswegian psych rock band, Apache Sun, is one of the darker bands of the bunch, but that's by no means a bad thing. Their music sounds dark, mysterious and sexy (think James Bond or Tarantino flicks), but the vocals are much lighter and are reminiscent of Tame Impala's Kevin Parker. The band are comprised of two brothers, Kris Mitchell and Pete Bruce, who do all the band's recording, mixing and mastering themselves. Check out their single "The Rain That Never Came" below.
4. Black Honey
Brighton rock band Black Honey is the only female-fronted band of the 10 groups listed here and is actually only the third female-fronted band that I've really connected with (the others being Wolf Alice and Sunflower Bean). Out of the three, I think these guys may take the cake. The band's baroque pop guitars remind me of the work of Alex Turner and Miles Kane, which may be why I resonate with their sound so much, but honestly I'm not sure this band functions without the lovely yet sassy vocals from lead singer Izzy B. Phillips.
5. Catholic Action
Another Glasgow-based band, Catholic Action, has been invading my ear space as of late. They describe their sound as somewhere in between glam rock and post-punk, which is quite refreshing because there hasn't been a lot of consistently good, successful post-punk bands in the last several years. Their debut single, "L.U.V," is unfortunately shorter than one would like it to be, but it's honestly the best debut single I've heard in a long time.
6. Vant
This London band plays emotional alternative, garage rock, but with a political edge (they mention their hatred for anti-immigration laws in "Birth Certificate" and they assert that the world doesn't need another Afghanistan in "The Answer"). They formed just two years ago, but they've already played a huge support slot with Catfish and The Bottlemen in Manchester and they've played some huge festivals like Glastonbury, T in the Park, Best Kept Secret and Fuji Rock. Check out their newest single, "Karma Seeker," below, from a full EP of the same name, which is out Aug. 5.
7. The Lapelles
Another band on this list from Glasgow? I think yes. These guys are easily the youngest group on this list, but you wouldn't know it from the shows they've already played. They've already scored support slots with The Last Shadow Puppets, The View and The Jesus and Mary Chain and they've already played the mighty T in the Park festival. Their music is bright guitar pop that would make The Vaccines proud, though they also cite older bands like Orange Juice and Aztec Camera as huge influences. Their newest song, "Grab Life By," is a must-hear track for the summer.
8. Blaenavon
Once I heard this Hampshire band's tune, "I Will Be The World", I knew I was hooked. The band sounds part indie, part folk, part rock, but is by no means an indie folk band. The three-piece band is equally talented and it couldn't be more evident in an acoustic video performance of the song "Prague." Harris, the drummer, sings backing vocals in addition to the drums while bass player, Frank, plays a classical bass rather than a bass guitar and singer and guitarist, Ben, displays his unique, unbelievably effortless, Jeff Buckley-esque vocals.
9. Baby Strange
So, to further reinforce the idea that Glasgow's got such a great music scene at the moment (if you didn't already notice), another band from the town, Baby Strange, is a band whose name you'll definitely hear soon if you haven't already. They've got a great punk rock sound with just the right amount of danger and sex appeal. Their must-hear tracks include "Pure Evil," "VVV" and "Pleasure City." In particular, the music video for "VVV" shows off the band's enthralling and charismatic frontman, Johnny Madden. All of their tunes clock in at just around two or three minutes, and their debut album, "Want It Need It," comes out on Sept. 2.
10. Cut Glass Kings
Birmingham rock band Cut Glass Kings are a psychedelic rock band that followed a path similar to Stockport band Blossoms, which is now flying up the charts. They, too, were discovered by The Coral's James Skelly and soon after, they signed to Skelly's record label, Skeleton Key Records. Their dark, melodic rock sound is infectious and it's evident in their two sole releases, "Drifter" and "Only A Daydream." I've also just discovered a third, unreleased song of theirs. I found a music video on Vimeo for a fantastically catchy track called "How Does It Feel" with shimmering keyboards and confident lead vocals.
