Winter is almost here (t-one month) and the remaining days of fall are ticking down. Don't worry, though: there are still plenty of rainy, gray days coming where you'll want to curl up in bed with some hot cocoa. I suggest grabbing a book to accompany your hot cocoa and enjoy a nice, new story. Here is a list of my favorite books that I think would be great for you to read.
1. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Yeah, most of us read it for an English class in high school. It's one of those books, though, that I find interesting enough to read over and over. To be honest, it's one of my favorite books. For those of you who don't know, this is a story in which a man moves to New York in the 1920's. The story follows his summer spent with his cousin, Daisy, and Jay Gatsby, the mysterious man next door. I don't want to give anything away for those who haven't read it, but it really is a beautiful story with a classical twist ending.
2. The List - Siobhan Vivian
I read this a couple of years ago, but I still love the plot. Basically, every year, a list is put up in a high school that reveals two girls from every grade: the ugliest and the prettiest. The story-line follows the point of view for every girl as they struggle to deal with what the list means for them. It's a nice, light read about the effects of bullying as we try to find out who wrote the list.
3. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage - Haruki Murakami
This is my favorite book of all time. The writing is beautiful, and it has so much meaning hidden within each line. The plot follows Tsukuru as he tries to find out why his four best friends isolated him sixteen years before the story takes place. We recount the years with him as he tells his story of how he's struggled through those sixteen cold years and what he plans for his future. Even though it seems like a long book, I read it pretty quickly because I was so intrigued (I'm a very slow reader). I hope everyone has a chance to read it as it's offered me so much inspiring advice.
4. The Opposite of Loneliness - Marina Keegan
This isn't actually a novel, but rather a collection of stories. It begins with an essay written by Marina titled "The Opposite of Loneliness." She wrote it for her fellow graduates to give them hope for their future. It really is beautiful. The rest of this book is a collection of other essays and short stories that Marina wrote that have resonated with me since I read them last year.
5. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin
This is my favorite trilogy (besides The Hunger Games...). This story will give you chills and it definitely tests you psychologically. The story kicks off with Mara Dyer moving to Florida from New England after her three friends die in a freak accident. Let me warn you now, this story is dark. That's what I like about it, though.
6. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender - Leslye Walton
I'm not going to lie, I cried like 40 pages into this book. That may be because I'm generally an emotional person, but then again the story did start off pretty sad. I'm currently reading this, and I have loved every page so far. It's not a long read, either. It's quite short, but as I mentioned I'm a slow reader. It's perfect for a night spent in bed reading.
7. The Rest of Us Just Live Here - Patrick Ness
I have yet to finish this book, but that's only because I am limited on time, so I haven't been able to read as much. It's pretty short and the story-line is very unique, so it's a great read for curling up in bed.
8. Harry Potter Series
If you're going to curl up under your warm blankets, you might as well take a classic with you. You can't read just one of these books at a time because you'll want to just read the whole story in one sitting. Who cares how many times you've read it before? What's better than a crispy, gray day spent reading Harry Potter in your bed with hot cocoa?
9. To All the Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han
I've never actually read this book, but it has my on my to-read list for quite some time now. It's a cute little contemporary read that would be great for a day in bed. It follows a girl named Lara who has written letters about all of her crushes and she has kept these letters under her bed, hidden. One day, though, she wakes up to find that the letters have been sent. I can't wait to read this one.
10. Anna and the French Kiss Trilogy- Stephanie Perkins
This trilogy is one that I haven't been able to check out yet, but I've wanted to read them for awhile. The books are all decently sized and they do not follow the same character in every book, which is why I added all three on my list. You can read them in any order, I believe. Each story features a new girl with a new love story.
I hope that you enjoy my suggestions and you spend a nice night in bed reading!
