I'm sure you're familiar with Valentine's Day, but are you familiar with Galentine's Day? It has become increasingly more popular each and every year, just like Friendsgiving has. We can credit none other than the witty, wicked woman mastermind from "Parks & Recreation," Leslie Knope, for this holiday.
As per Leslie's rules, Galentine's Day is to be celebrated the day before Valentine's with all your gal pals (sorry, men, you're not included). Activities include gift giving, showering one another with compliments, and usually food... lots and lots of yummy, delicious food.
Here is a list of some potential Galentine's activities:
1. Dinner party.
Gather your closest gals, and prepare for a night filled with food, laughter, gifts, emotion, more food and wine (predominately wine), and desserts (it's a separate food category, okay?). It's hard to top an organized, well-thought-out dinner party, but it is also a lot of work. Best to weight the pros and cons of putting on such an extravaganza. After all, you must go all out!
2. Movies.
Either nestle up on a couch with your friends or take to the theaters for a screening of your favorite film. Of course, popcorn (freshly coated in butter), sweets, and drinks are a must to fully indulge in the cinematic experience. It's hard to go wrong with a nice rom-com given the day, but leave that up for group debate.
3. Rollerskating.
Get ready to watch one another fall on your butts, knees, hands, and hopefully not your faces (but sometimes you can't fight gravity). This is sure to bring out some hearty laughter, great memories, and hopefully not too many bruises. Just picture this: you form a line of girl power linked arm and arm with your besties as you skate to a classic throwback from the '80s or '90s. Flower power, baby.
4. Gift exchange.
This is an element of the classic Leslie Knope Galentine's celebration. Now, Leslie believes in the act of homemade, premeditated gifts with a lot of love put into them. Buying gifts is not what this holiday is for. If that means attempting to master mosaic art portraits, like Leslie, then so be it; it's the thought that counts for this grand gal day. Make that shit sentimental.
5. Wine and games.
This may seem stereotypical, and to be honest, it is for a reason because we love this type of evening. There is something about a relaxing (wine) evening filled with games such as Pictionary, Cards Against Humanity, Catchphrase, Hangman (no, you aren't too old), Never Have I Ever, and any other fantastically fun game out there. The atmosphere is light and offers a place to chill and have fun with your girlfriends.
6. Go painting.
I'm sure companies like Painting With A Twist would offer a great incentive to host your Galentine's party there. You'll get to chat and enjoy the company of your closest friends; plus, you get to paint something, so that's pretty neat.
7. Go to a concert.
Now, this may or may not work out in your favor as far as dates go. If celebrating Galentine's Day on Feb. 13 is absolutely necessary, then concert opportunities will be limited; however, if you choose to celebrate the day of Galentine's Day on a different day, say on the weekend, then you will have more concert choices to choose from. This would be a great way to get out of the house and enjoy some great music with your GREAT friends.
8. Spa day/night.
Pamper your gal group with mani/pedis, face masks, and possibly massages! Breathe in the scent of lavender and slip into a serene, blissful mood next to your besties.
9. Volunteer.
Sign your gal group up to spend some quality time giving back at a nearby animal or homeless shelter. The world needs more good in it, so lead by example. Plus, you'll have fun and maybe get to meet some great people/pooches.
10. Plan a trip.
This requires probably the most effort out of all the previous options; however, it will surely be an experience. Maybe the gal gang takes a quick road trip to a nearby popping town or hits up the slopes, the beach, or maybe even a different continent. Get wild with it!
