10 Fun Ways to Spend the Fourth of July

If there is one thing about being stuck at home for the summer that makes students happy, it's celebrating 4th of July weekend.

Every year, it seems that summers consist of "I'm bored and lonely" Snapchats or texts from our friends, yet on the 4th of July, they are having the best time of their lives. That's the thing about the 4th of July, it brings out the best in people.

Unfortunately, partying on the 4th of July is expensive, and you are probably working with a college student's budget. You can't afford to go to the nice bars in your hometown and spend $8 on watered down whiskey and cokes -- well, you could, but c'mon -- be smart for once.

The 4th of July is one of the best holidays for people of all ages to come together and celebrate, but like everything in life, having a good time often comes with a price.

Still, our forefathers didn't fight and claw their way to independence just for you to sit inside on this important holiday. In fact, anyone who does sit inside on the 4th is just being rude to the men that started it all. So with that in mind, here are 10 perfect ways to have a fun and cheap 4th of July.

1. Hangout with the family.

Look, I know this isn't your ideal choice, but honestly it is the cheapest. Mom and Dad only have a couple more weeks with you back in the nest, and they are dying to spend their weekend off with you. You can do whatever you want with them, and more then likely they will be paying for it. Plus, now that you can drink with them, you will have some funny stories to tell your kids.

2. Go to the lake.

So, this is more of a southern thing, rather than a northern one, but lake weekends are fun. Probably some of the best memories you will have will involve loading up the truck with a dozen friends and enjoying Independence day on the water. At the lake there are multiple things that are free (rope swinging, cliff jumping, nerf football etc.), plus a case of beer is only, like, 20 bucks. It is a free place to have fun, and a cheap way to party for hours on end.

3. Slip 'n' slide.

No, it's not just for kids. When you were a little child, the slip 'n' slide was probably your favorite way to cool off on a hot summer day. As an adult, it has now become your new favorite drinking game. All you need is a tarp, a table, water, a couple cases of beer and cups, and you have one of the best party games of the summer. Who still doesn't love slip 'n' slides?

4. Play baseball.

Summer is probably the only time where baseball is truly relevant though out this country. Everyone knows how to play the game and, more then likely, you own a glove or two. All you need is a couple of baseballs or softballs, a bat and a dozen people and you are set. Plus enjoying a beer or two after playing is always a fun way to cool off.

5. Go to the beach.

While lakes are fun, going to the beach in the summer seems to be the norm in today's society. Just fill up the car and a cooler, and you will have a nice relaxing day with some good friends. Not only that, but everything you can do at the lake you can do at the beach, plus more. What's not to love about soaking up some sun and enjoying the day with your friends?

6. Go Kayaking or float the river.

If your hometown has a river, kayaking is a must do. Not only is it peaceful, but it is a lot of fun. Sure the sun is blazing down on you but, hey, you have a giant pool of water to jump into. If you don't want to kayak, then just float the river. All you need is a six-pack and an inner tube, and you will have hours of fun in no time.

7. Have a joint BBQ.

Look, just because they are your friends doesn't mean you need to pay for everything. Get a group of people together, tell them to each bring something, and start firing up the grill. Some of the best memories are made around a grill making hotdogs, brats and burgers. Plus, if someone you know really does know how to grill, you are set for good times with good food.

8. Go camping.

Camping with the folks and camping with friends are two different types of camping. Camping with friends is more about you going out into wilderness and being at piece with nature. With your parents, it's about Dad trying to play "Kumbaya" on the guitar. There are few things as fun as laying out under the stars with your friends, and having a great time around the campfire. Just stay away from any camps or cabins you might see near by.

9. Go to a parade.

Fourth of July parades are more of a local town thing, but can still be a good time. You sit outside, pop back a beer or two, and enjoy seeing Uncle Sam costumes galore. Sure, this is more of an old man or kids thing, but all in all it's still a fun way to enjoy Independence Day with friends.

10. Buy fireworks.

Of course, the last one is going out with a bang. Fireworks are a part of the 4th of July just like candy is a part of Halloween. No matter if you buy them or just watch them, you need to experience fireworks some time of the day. Why not just buy the fireworks, and then enjoy blowing them up at your own home. Just be careful when lighting them, you don't want to end up missing a finger -- or five.

Happy 4th of July, everyone!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
